White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy had another tense confrontation in the White House briefing room on Wednesday. The heated debate focused on the administration’s language regarding former President Donald Trump in light of a recent second assassination attempt against him. Doocy questioned whether the White House’s repeated labeling of Trump as a “threat” was contributing to political violence, a claim Jean-Pierre strongly denied.
The tension began when Doocy opened his question by referencing the attempted assassination of Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club. He asked, “It’s been only two days since somebody allegedly tried to kill Donald Trump again. And you’re here at the podium in the White House briefing room calling him a threat. How many more assassination attempts on Donald Trump until the president and the vice president and you pick a different word to describe Trump other than threat?”
“I actually completely disagree with the premise of your question, the question that you’re asking. It is also incredibly dangerous in the way that you’re asking it, because American people are watching,” Jean-Pierre said. She then accused Doocy of distorting the administration’s message and claimed that the White House has always worked to lower the temperature on political rhetoric. “To say that from an administration who has consistently condemned political violence…that’s what we’ve done from here.”
But the Fox News White House correspondent was undaunted and pressed ‘KJP’ further. “There are mentally unstable people who are attempting to kill political candidates, attempting to kill Donald Trump, and they are still hearing this White House refer to him as a threat. Is there no concern that people are taking that literally?” Doocy asked.
“We’re using examples. We’re not just saying that just to say it. January 6, Peter. January 6,” Jean-Pierre repeated. She reiterated claims that the White House has consistently condemned political violence “over and over again,” but that their criticisms of Trump are rooted in his own behavior and rhetoric.
WATCH:
Former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped another assassination attempt on Sunday when a Secret Service agent discharged a firearm at an armed suspect at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect was reportedly seen pushing the barrel of an AK-47 rifle through the plant-lined fence surrounding the property, just yards away from where Trump was playing golf.
The incident marks the second attempt on Trump’s life within the past two months. Fortunately, the swift action of the Secret Service agent prevented any tragedy. The former president has been increasingly targeted by threats, which Trump and his supporters claim are a result of the growing hostile rhetoric from prominent Democrats. Trump swiftly shifted the blame, ticking off dozens of prominent Democrats he says have incited violence against him through their persistent and aggressive public statements. He published a compilation of dozens of inflammatory quotes, asserting that Democrats and media figures have fueled the hatred that led to the attack.

Tops on the list of those cited by Trump is Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been vocal in her opposition to the former president. Harris has referred to Trump as a “threat to democracy and fundamental freedoms” on numerous occasions. Her statements, such as “It’s on us to recognize the threat [Trump] poses,” have drawn criticism from Trump’s supporters, who believe that such comments are not just political rhetoric but calls for action against the former president.

In one recent tweet indicative of the others, Harris wrote: “If reelected, Trump has openly said he intends to weaponize the Department of Justice against his enemies. He openly talks about his admiration for dictators and has vowed to be a dictator on day one. It’s on us to recognize the threat he poses—the choice is clear in November.”

President Joe Biden is also high atop Trump’s list of Democrats spewing dangerous rhetoric. Trump’s list highlights multiple instances where Biden has called Trump a threat, including quotes like, “Trump is a genuine threat to this nation” and “Trump and MAGA Republicans are a threat to the very soul of this country.”

In addition to Harris and Biden, Democrats such as Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) have publicly described Trump and his supporters as dangerous or existential threats to American democracy. Trump’s team contends that this kind of rhetoric exceeds standard political discourse and has incited acts of violence. “[Trump] is a threat to our democracy of the kind that we have not seen,” Pelosi said during the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Pelosi compared defeating Trump to America going to war against the British and Confederacy.
