Former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped another assassination attempt on Sunday when a Secret Service agent discharged a firearm at an armed suspect at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The suspect was reportedly seen pushing the barrel of an AK-47 rifle through the plant-lined fence surrounding the property, just yards away from where Trump was playing golf.
The incident marks the second attempt on Trump’s life within the past two months. Fortunately, the swift action of the Secret Service agent prevented any tragedy. The former president has been increasingly targeted by threats, which Trump and his supporters claim are a result of the growing hostile rhetoric from prominent Democrats. Trump swiftly shifted the blame, ticking off dozens of prominent Democrats he says have incited violence against him through their persistent and aggressive public statements. He published a compilation of dozens of inflammatory quotes, asserting that Democrats and media figures have fueled the hatred that led to the attack.

Tops on the list of those cited by Trump is Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been vocal in her opposition to the former president. Harris has referred to Trump as a “threat to democracy and fundamental freedoms” on numerous occasions. Her statements, such as “It’s on us to recognize the threat [Trump] poses,” have drawn criticism from Trump’s supporters, who believe that such comments are not just political rhetoric but calls for action against the former president.

In one recent tweet indicative of the others, Harris wrote: “If reelected, Trump has openly said he intends to weaponize the Department of Justice against his enemies. He openly talks about his admiration for dictators and has vowed to be a dictator on day one. It’s on us to recognize the threat he poses—the choice is clear in November.”

President Joe Biden is also high atop Trump’s list of Democrats spewing dangerous rhetoric. Trump’s list highlights multiple instances where Biden has called Trump a threat, including quotes like, “Trump is a genuine threat to this nation” and “Trump and MAGA Republicans are a threat to the very soul of this country.”

In addition to Harris and Biden, Democrats such as Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) have publicly described Trump and his supporters as dangerous or existential threats to American democracy. Trump’s team contends that this kind of rhetoric exceeds standard political discourse and has incited acts of violence. “[Trump] is a threat to our democracy of the kind that we have not seen,” Pelosi said during the 2024 Democratic National Convention. Pelosi compared defeating Trump to America going to war against the British and Confederacy.
Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) once described Trump as an “enemy of the United States,” while Rep. Dan Goldman (D-CA) stated Trump “has to be eliminated.”
Yesterday on TV, I mistakenly used the wrong word to express the importance for America that Donald Trump doesn’t become President again.
While he must be defeated, I certainly wish no harm to him and do not condone political violence.
I apologize for the poor choice of words.

Trump’s allies have also targeted the media with their criticisms. They allege that networks like MSNBC and publications such as The Washington Post have persistently depicted Trump as a threat, thereby escalating tensions. Additionally, media personalities like Rachel Vindman, Lester Holt, and Jonathan Chait have been specifically criticized by Trump’s camp, which views their coverage as biased and hostile towards the former president.
The assassination attempt has intensified the rift between Trump’s supporters and his opponents. As tensions escalate, the former president’s team is urging political and media figures to reduce inflammatory rhetoric to prevent further violence. However, with the 2024 election on the horizon, it seems unlikely that the heated political hostility will ease anytime soon.
