Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made a big announcement following what the FBI said was an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at his international golf course near Palm Beach on Sunday — the second in as many months. “The State of Florida will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club. The people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee,” DeSantis wrote on the X platform.

Blackwater founder and former Navy SEAL Erik Prince called on the Florida Republican and 2024 presidential candidate to launch an investigation of his own, suggesting that leaving it to the Biden-Harris administration would yield no real answers. “Please assume direct control of the investigation into this attempted assassination of DJT. Tell the Feds to wait in line until Florida resources have done a thorough and transparent look into all the evidence,” Prince wrote in an X post addressed to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. “The Feds have dropped the ball thoroughly on Butler PA. Time for Florida to save the day especially since this attempt happened only 300m from the State Forensics Lab.”

During an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, Prince added: “Governor DeSantis, love what you’ve done to the state of Florida. Now is the time to prove the Florida Bureau of Investigations’ merit in cracking this crime and not brushing it under the rug like [what] happened in Pennsylvania.” Prince went on to reiterate that the federal government “cannot be trusted” to conduct an unbiased and thorough investigation. So again, the state government has a huge role in this in preventing assassination and murder in their state. Clearly the federal government cannot be trusted here. Sadly, it’s time for Governor DeSantis to flex up and see that this is done properly.”
Police have identified Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, as the suspected gunman apprehended in Martin County, Florida, just north of West Palm Beach. Routh’s plan was interrupted when a Secret Service advance team noticed the barrel of a gun protruding from behind a fence about 300 yards from where the former president was golfing. An agent then fired at the suspect, who fled the scene.
