Former President Donald Trump is reported to be “safe” after shots were fired “in his vicinity” while he was golfing at his West Palm Beach course. In a brief press release, campaign communications director Stephen Cheung provided no additional details. According to law enforcement sources, the Secret Service responded to the incident near Trump as he was leaving the golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Cheung said Sunday afternoon.
CNN reported: ” Officials believe an armed individual intended to target former President Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club, according to sources briefed on the matter. A car has been stopped in relation to the incident nearby, according to a law enforcement official.”
A person has been detained in connection with the incident at Trump International Golf Club on Sunday, according to law enforcement sources. The Secret Service fired at the suspect, and a long gun has been recovered. Officials believe the armed individual intended to target former President Donald Trump at his golf club, based on information from sources briefed on the situation, CNN added.
“The President and Vice President have been briefed about the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was golfing. They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” according to a statement from the White House. Trump said after the incident: “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors start spiraling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.”
Radio talk show host and podcaster Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service agent, predicted another potential security “incident” involving the agency and Trump, suggesting that its current state may be worse than before the assassination attempt against the former president on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Following Congress’s inquiries into the assassination attempt, former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned, and Ronald L. Rowe Jr. was appointed as interim director. However, Bongino has consistently criticized Rowe on his show, asserting that the agency’s leadership remains either corrupt or incompetent.
Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., asked Bongino during a Heritage Foundation forum earlier this month, “Is the Secret Service in a better spot today with Director Rowe in charge?” Bongino said: “No, it’s worse,” going on to predict that “something else” will happen, although he added, “I pray to my Lord and savior Jesus Christ that I’m wrong.” But, he noted further: “[If] you think this is the last incident, you’re out of your mind.”
