Early data from Duval County, a key bellwether in U.S. elections, is raising alarm for Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democrats while being great news for former President Donald Trump. Duval, located in Florida and which accurately predicted the presidential winners in both 2016 and 2020, has shown a significant shift to the right in early mail-in voting, suggesting a potential disaster for Democrats in 2024.
The numbers are telling. Republican mail-in ballot requests in Duval have jumped by 7% compared to 2020, while Democratic requests have dropped by 4.6%. This has resulted in a notable 11.5-point swing toward the GOP, which now holds 36.7% of mail-in ballot requests, compared to 46.1% for Democrats. Even requests from independent and third-party voters have fallen by 2.3%. Duval County’s rightward shift reflects a broader trend in Florida, where Republicans have gained ground in recent years.
Gov. Ron DeSantis’ landslide reelection in 2022 was an early indicator of this momentum. What’s happening in Duval is even more striking: the county’s mail-in voting numbers are now even redder than they were in 2022, a year when Republicans dominated in Florida. With Joe Biden’s approval ratings consistently low, Kamala Harris has been seen as the Democrats’ best hope to retain control of the White House. However, the enthusiasm gap between Republicans and Democrats, highlighted by the Duval County data, is raising serious doubts about the Democrats’ ability to energize and mobilize their base. The gap has sparked concerns that the party may struggle to rally the necessary support heading into the 2024 election.

In the 2020 presidential election, Duval County, Florida, experienced a notable political shift. Joe Biden narrowly won the county with 51.1% of the vote, marking the first time a Democratic presidential candidate had carried Duval since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Donald Trump received 47.2% of the vote in 2020. In contrast, in the 2016 election, Duval went to Trump, who won the county with 48.5% of the vote, while Hillary Clinton garnered 47.3%. Historically, Republicans had performed well in Duval, and while Trump continued that trend in 2016, the margin was smaller than in previous GOP victories in the area.
Trump fired up thousands of supporters during a raucous rally speech when he pledged to immediately sign an executive order protecting Americans’ free speech rights and barring any federal employee from engaging in censorship of any sort.
“I will bring back free speech in America because it’s been taken away. They’ve taken away your free speech and the fake news is a threat to this country. They are just horrible people. Not everyone, I mean I know most of them up there. Most of them are good… Some are good but some are just absolutely terrible human beings. They know what’s going on,” Trump said during the Mosinee, Wis., rally earlier this week.
He added: “You don’t know the details. When we know the facts then the story gets written the exact opposite of what it is, you start to lose faith in the press, I will tell you. But I will sign an executive order banning any federal employee from colluding to limit speech, and we will fire every federal bureaucrat who is engaged in domestic censorship under the Harris regime. We will do that.”
