Sen. J.D. Vance, whom former President Donald Trump last month chose to be his 2024 running mate, has made a big, bold prediction heading into the final months before Election Day. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Vance said he intends to help the former president win historically “blue” states again. Regarding the key battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—traditionally known as the Democrats’ ‘blue wall’— Vance is optimistic that they will become the “red wall” in November.
“We’re going to make sure that Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan go red,” Trump’s 2024 running mate emphasized in an exclusive national interview with Fox News Digital on the campaign trail in southwestern Michigan this past week.
For nearly 25 years, Democrats consistently won all three working-class states—Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—in presidential elections until Trump narrowly carried them in his 2016 victory. In 2020, President Biden regained all three states with narrow margins, defeating Trump. These states remain highly competitive as Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump vie for them in the 2024 presidential election.
Last month’s Republican National Convention took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s largest city. Following the convention, Trump and Vance held their first joint campaign rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, just a few miles north of where Vance was interviewed by Fox News on Wednesday. As a first-term populist senator and a key Trump ally in the Senate, Vance has visited all three ‘blue wall’ states in the past two weeks. He told Fox News that he plans to spend significant time in these states throughout the summer and autumn, promoting the GOP ticket’s message to working-class voters.
“We’re going to make sure that Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan go red. People are sick of green energy scams that ship our manufacturing jobs to China instead of keeping them right here at home in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. I think we have a great pro-manufacturing, pro-American worker message,” he emphasized. Vance said that his pitch to working-class voters is a “core message that Donald Trump and I have in this campaign and this is a good place for people to hear it.”
Hailing from Ohio, which borders both Pennsylvania and Michigan, Vance’s Midwestern and working-class roots in the ‘Rust Belt’ likely influenced Trump’s decision to select him as his running mate. Prior to his Senate run, Vance gained national recognition with his bestselling book “Hillbilly Elegy,” which chronicles his upbringing in a struggling steel mill city and his Appalachian Kentucky roots. The book’s success, including its adaptation into a Netflix film, highlighted the values of many working-class Americans who became supporters of Trump’s policies.
Vance, meanwhile, was compelled to make an emergency landing on Friday afternoon due to a malfunction. The Boeing 737 safely landed at Milwaukee International Airport, and there were no reported injuries, according to WISN.
“The pilot advised there was a malfunction with the door seal. After declaring an emergency, Trump Force Two returned to Milwaukee. As soon as the issue was resolved, the plane returned to its originally planned flight path back to Cincinnati,” a spokesperson for Vance told the outlet. Earlier this month, the Trump campaign announced its acquisition of a Boeing 737-800, named “Trump Force Two,” for transporting J.D. Vance, according to Business Insider. It is not clear whether the malfunctioning plane is the same aircraft.

Boeing planes have been closely examined in recent months due to viral videos depicting malfunctions. One clip showed the blowout of a Boeing 737 Max 9’s door panel mid-flight, which circulated In January. It’s important to note that Trump Force Two is not the same variant.
