The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday launched a formal investigation into Authentic Campaigns, the Democratic fundraising firm run by Loren Merchan, daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who oversaw the high-profile criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, which culminated in Trump’s conviction.
Loren’s firm is widely recognized for its extensive connections to influential Democratic leaders and its pivotal role in shaping digital campaign strategies, including those of Kamala Harris. “The Committee on the Judiciary is conducting oversight of politically motivated prosecutions by state and local officials,” the letter to the firm read. The committee also detailed the complex backdrop of District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s actions against Trump, which used “a convoluted and novel legal theory” to indict the former president on charges that federal, state, and local officials had previously declined to pursue.
“Experts have raised substantial concerns with Judge Merchan, your father, refusing to recuse himself from President Trump’s case despite your work on behalf of President Trump’s political adversaries,” the letter continued. Since 2019, Loren has been a significant figure in Democratic campaigns. Notably, she served as the director of digital persuasion for then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris and also held a vice presidency at Authentic Campaigns.

After Harris withdrew from the primary race, Loren Merchan was promoted to president of Authentic Campaigns. Under her leadership, the firm played a pivotal role in the Biden-Harris 2020 campaign. The firm utilized innovative strategies, including a strong focus on digital paid media and AI-driven voter engagement, specifically designed to target swing-state voters during the pandemic, reports noted.
According to the Judiciary Committee’s letter, public records indicate that the Biden-Harris campaign paid Authentic Campaigns over $2 million for its services within just one month. “Your firm’s tactics to ‘harness the potential of conversation AI for presidential campaign marketing’ has been both noted and scrutinized in light of recent events,” the committee wrote.
The investigation also highlights significant fundraising efforts related to Donald Trump’s indictment. It reveals that Authentic Campaigns’ major clients, such as Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and the Senate Majority PAC, have collectively raised over $93 million in campaign donations by capitalizing on the narrative of Trump’s indictment. Schiff’s campaign has raised $20 million since the indictment, while the Senate Majority PAC has accumulated an impressive $73.6 million.
Earlier this week, Trump and his legal team have filed a new request to disqualify Judge Merchan from his New York criminal trial. This action follows revelations about Loren’s professional ties to Harris.
The appeal submitted on Thursday contends that Judge Merchan’s impartiality has been compromised due to his daughter’s financial connections to prominent Democratic figures. The filing noted that Merchan’s consulting firm reportedly experienced a significant boost in business this year, nearly doubling its revenue from the previous year promoting Democrats who fundraised off Trump.
The firm has also acquired new clients, including Dan Goldman (D-CA) and Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), further intensifying the political connections that could present conflicts of interest. Schiff, a prominent figure in Trump’s impeachment, along with other clients, has heavily utilized Merchan’s digital consulting services.
