New footage from the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13 has been released. Captured by Dave Stewart, who attended the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the video depicts local law enforcement officers in a frantic search for the shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, before the shots are fired. The audio also captures Trump speaking in the background.
The video recorded by Stewart, which was taken between 6:10 and 6:15 p.m., captures the moments leading up to the shooting that occurred at 6:11 p.m. According to a Fox News report published on Monday, text messages have revealed that law enforcement officers responsible for protecting the former president during the rally in Pennsylvania identified Crooks as suspicious 90 minutes before he opened fire on Trump and the crowd supporting his candidacy.

“The messages, obtained by Fox News Digital from Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, who obtained them from Beaver County Emergency Services Unit, showed that officers flagged 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks after he was spotted using a range finder – but did not approach him. The first screenshot is a group chat of Beaver ESU officers, while the second is from one Beaver County sniper departing his shift at around 4:30 – approximately an hour and a half before Trump took the stage. The New York Times first reported the text screenshots,” the report went on to say.
A group chat at 4:36 p.m. shows that one law enforcement officer informed everyone that his shift was ending and warned about a man, now known to be Crooks, parked near their vehicle. The officer’s text read, “Someone followed our lead and snuck in and parked by our cars just so you know.” Another message noted that Crooks was positioned about 50 yards from the event’s exit, sitting at a picnic table. In response, a pair of counter-snipers replied with a thumbs-up emoji and a “Roger that.”

Forty-five minutes later, around 5:10 p.m., officers observed that Crooks was on the move and had positioned himself near the American Glass International building. This was the same building where Crooks would later climb to take aim at the former president. While waiting, an officer took a picture of Crooks, showing him leaning against the building. “Kid learning [sic] around building we are in,” an officer stated in a text message that accompanied the image of Crooks. “AGR I believe it is. I did see him with a range finder looking towards stage. FYI. If you wanna notify SS snipers to look out.” The officer then says he lost sight of the suspect. Another follow-up message said, “Call it in to command and have a uniform check it out.”
