Texas state representatives are calling for the resignation of Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett after she proposed a bill to revoke former President Donald Trump’s Secret Service protection following the assassination attempt against him on Saturday.
A group of 27 Texas lawmakers and political candidates sent a letter on Monday, urging Crockett to resign. They cited her co-sponsorship of a bill in April that aimed to remove Trump’s Secret Service protective detail after his conviction in a New York state court on ‘hush money’ charges.
Crockett, along with seven other Democrats, sponsored H.R. 8081, also known as the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act. This bill aimed to end presidential protection for individuals convicted of a federal or state offense that could result in at least one year of prison time. The legislation was specifically aimed at Trump.
“Texans believe that, regardless of party, Presidents of the United States of America, both current and former, must be protected. Considering Saturday’s assassination attempt on President Trump, which resulted in him being literally shot in the ear and in other innocent Americans being killed or injured, and, since you, just three months ago, sponsored legislation (HR 8081) to remove his Secret Service protective detail, we, the undersigned current and future members of the Texas Legislature, call on you to immediately resign your position in Congress. You have forfeited any moral authority to represent the State of Texas,” the state legislators wrote in the letter obtained by the Daily Caller.
State Rep. Brian Harrison, who served as the Chief of Staff at the Department of Health and Human Services under Trump, led the demand for Crockett’s resignation. He argued to the Daily Caller that Crockett’s actions fail to reflect the values of the Texans they represent.
“Democrat extremists like Jasmine Crockett who are working to make it easier to harm former Presidents should not represent Texas in Congress,” Harrison said. “I shudder to think about what may have happened had they been successful three months ago in taking away President Trump’s security detail. My colleagues and I will not tolerate this and are demanding her resignation. The Texans we serve believe that the security of American presidents is non-negotiable.”
