Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced he will hold a rally in the South Bronx next week, following an event in the Democratic stronghold of New Jersey last Saturday that drew tens of thousands of supporters.
The New York Post reported that the upcoming rally in New York City will be Trump’s first in his home state since his 2016 presidential campaign victory. In announcing the South Bronx rally, Team Trump issued a statement criticizing President Joe Biden’s “failed policies,” which they claim have caused great suffering for New Yorkers. “The Empire State, a place near to President Trump’s heart, has been decimated by Biden,” the Trump campaign added. “President Trump will ease the financial pressures placed on households and re-establish law and order in New York!”
Trump spends most of his time in New York City during the week due to his ongoing hush-money trial, which keeps him off the campaign trail for four days a week. Despite this, the former president has been reaching out to voters in the Big Apple. In April, Trump met with bodega workers in Manhattan to discuss the rise in crime in New York City. Earlier this month, he delivered pizzas to firefighters at the New York City Fire Department.
“We’re going to run very hard in New York. We have a good chance of winning New York, in my opinion,” Trump told reporters outside the Manhattan courtroom last month. “We’re going to give it a shot. We’re very close in New York, I understand. We’re leading in the country by a lot. As you saw yesterday, we’re up by a lot in every swing state, so I think we’re going to do very well.”
Trump’s South Bronx rally is scheduled for Thursday, May 23, in Crotona Park. The Trump campaign has secured a permit for up to 3,500 attendees. According to the Post, Team Trump stated that the former president will address the economy, crime, and the illegal immigration crisis during his speech.
“We can Make America Great Again by tackling lawlessness head-on, ceasing the endless flow of illegal immigrants across our southern border, and reversing the detrimental effects of inflation by restoring people’s wealth,” the Trump campaign said.
