Special Counsel Jack Smith is once again proving that his ‘investigation’ into former President Donald Trump is nothing more than political persecution.
According to a report on Thursday, Smith is readying a plan to bring upwards of 45 new charges against Trump in regard to his classified documents case.
According to a report by The Independent, the Justice Department has devised a strategy to levy approximately 30 to 45 additional charges against the former president across multiple districts, effectively transferring the prosecutorial responsibilities away from Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon.
Sources suggest that the new indictments might also encompass individuals associated with President Trump.
If any new charges are filed, they would likely be included in a “superseding indictment” aimed at circumventing the ongoing case involving Smith. The charges could be brought either in Cannon’s district in southern Florida or in New Jersey, where discussions took place, and Trump was allegedly recorded discussing the documents under investigation.
The new charges could be filed “in the coming weeks,” the report said.
According to the report, Smith’s legal team expresses significant apprehension that Cannon may indirectly favor the president who nominated her. They cite previous instances where she ruled in favor of Trump, such as the August 2022 FBI search of his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Additionally, Cannon has asserted that the 45th president receives “deferential treatment” from prosecutors due to his position, as reported by the New York Daily News.
Reports of Smith’s contingency plans emerged as the Miami grand jury, responsible for initially indicting Trump in the case, is reportedly reviewing fresh evidence against him.
It appears that they might consider adding more charges to the existing case, those reports noted.
Susie Wiles, a key advisor to Trump during his reelection campaign, is also under scrutiny and may face charges based on evidence suggesting that she was shown a classified map by the former president in 2021.
“Separate cases against the President and his attorneys, including former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, are ongoing at the state and federal levels related to statements made following the outcomes of the 2020 election,” Trending Politics noted.
