Former President Donald Trump wants to be President Donald Trump again, after declaring himself a candidate for the 2024 GOP nomination Tuesday night at Mar-a-Lago.

And within hours, the former president put his political opponents in the Washington establishment on notice.

“To further drain the swamp, I will push for a constitutional amendment to impose term limits on members of Congress. It’s time,” he said during his speech.

“And I will ask for a permanent ban on taxpayer funding of campaigns, a lifetime ban on lobbying by former members of Congress,” he continued.

Neither proposal is likely to sit will with career politicians in either party.

And while some Republicans had encouraged the party to move on from the former president, others have already embraced his return to the fold.

“I fully support him running again. Under his presidency, America was strong at home and abroad, our economy was red hot, our border was secure, our neighborhoods were safe, our law enforcement was respected, and our enemies feared us,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), the House’s No. 3 Republican, said.

Previous reports have said Trump is considering her to be his running mate.

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio added: “President Trump did more of what he said he’d do than any President in our lifetime. Period.”

Trump opened his speech this way:

“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and my fellow citizens, America’s comeback starts right now. I am running because I believe the world has not yet seen the true glory of what this nation can be.

“We have not reached that pinnacle. Believe it or not. In fact, we can go very far. We’re going to have to go far first. We have to get out of this ditch.

“Just as I promised in 2016, I am your voice.”
