Elon Musk responded to Republicans’ sweeping midterm losses Wednesday with sarcasm after spending unprecedented sums supporting GOP candidates across the country. “Guess my election-interfering space lasers didn’t work this time ????,” Musk wrote on X shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday.
The SpaceX and Tesla CEO followed with another joke as Democratic victories accumulated nationally and in his adopted home state of Texas. “Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now,” Musk wrote.
The lighthearted reaction followed an election cycle in which Musk became the largest individual political donor in modern American history. Musk spent an estimated $445 million to $446 million during the 2026 cycle, overwhelmingly supporting Republicans and Republican-aligned political organizations. Much of that money flowed through Musk’s America PAC and major Republican groups focused on congressional races.
The Senate Leadership Fund alone received $158 million from Musk in September as Republicans battled to preserve their Senate majority. Those investments ultimately failed to prevent Democrats from capturing both chambers of Congress in Tuesday’s elections. The results were particularly painful for Musk in Texas, where he invested heavily in Republican candidates and maintains major business operations.
Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton lost the U.S. Senate race to Democrat James Talarico despite receiving significant support from Musk-backed political organizations. Talarico’s victory made him the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas since 1988. Musk had aggressively targeted Talarico during the closing stretch, using X to criticize the Democrat’s policies and encourage Texans to vote Republican.
Talarico responded to Musk directly during his victory speech Tuesday night. “We just proved that all the money in the world is no match for the people of Texas,” Talarico said. The Democrat portrayed the contest as a battle against wealthy political donors and Washington’s political establishment throughout the campaign. “In this race, we went up against our own Goliaths,” Talarico said after winning.
Musk’s preferred candidates suffered setbacks beyond the Senate race as Democrats captured several major Texas offices previously controlled by Republicans. Democrat Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, ending decades of Republican control of the Texas governorship. Musk had contributed $5 million toward supporting Abbott’s reelection effort.
Democrats also captured the lieutenant governor and attorney general races as part of their unusually strong performance across Texas. The losses carry additional significance because Musk moved several of his businesses to Texas after becoming increasingly critical of California’s political leadership.
Tesla, SpaceX and X have established headquarters in Texas, making the state particularly important to Musk’s sprawling business empire. His joke about moving data centers into space came as Democrats who have criticized large artificial-intelligence facilities gained political power in Texas.
Musk’s political role could now face additional scrutiny when Democrats assume control of Congress in January. Democratic lawmakers have previously discussed investigations involving Musk’s businesses and their extensive relationships with the federal government.
