Kamala Harris showed up to a Las Vegas event this week and apparently decided to test out a brand-new speaking style on the crowd. The verdict from just about everyone watching: it did not go well.
She spoke very slowly, in a lower register, as if the audience needed every word sounded out for them one syllable at a time. “That era of feeling powerless, like what can we do, this just keeps happening, that era is over because we are now 13 days away from doing something about it to stop the pain,” she said, at roughly the pace of a kindergarten teacher explaining naptime rules.
Then it got worse. Kamala Harris Las Vegas speech Harris kept going in the same tone: “So that’s where we are right now, and that’s kind of exciting. Right? This is some good stuff. Like, we’re taking our power, we’re using it, to determine who will hold offices like being the governor of Nevada. Which is so important for the people everyday on the most basic issues that affect our lives. Who will continue to walk those halls of Congress being an extraordinary fighter.” Cool stuff. Very coherent. Ten out of ten, no notes.
Social media did what social media does. Video of the speech spread fast, and a clip of the visibly unamused woman standing behind Harris became its own moment. Reactions ranged from baffled to outright gleeful. “She sounds like she’s talking to dumb little children,” wrote one user. Others pointed out this is basically the Democrats’ operating theory of voters in general, so maybe it tracks.
This isn’t the first time Harris has experimented with a new persona. She dropped out of the 2020 presidential race before Iowa even voted, then lost the 2024 general election decisively. Every few months there’s a new Kamala reboot, and every reboot somehow manages to be stranger than the last one. The slow, breathy kindergarten-teacher voice is the latest entry in that long and painful catalog.
Nobody knows for certain what Harris is planning for 2028, but her continued public appearances and apparent style experiments suggest she hasn’t exactly retired to a quiet life of obscurity. Republicans, for their part, are happy to encourage that. One social media account put it simply: “Please God. Please have Democrats have Kamala be their Presidential candidate in 2028.” Amen to that. If the Democratic Party wants to hand the next election gift-wrapped with a bow on top, nobody on the right is going to stop them.
