White House border czar Tom Homan came out swinging over the weekend, saying federal investigators have a “strong case” against Rep. Ilhan Omar. This comes less than a week after Homeland Security Investigations executed a court-authorized search warrant at the Minnesota Democrat’s Washington, D.C., home, with the investigation tied to the circumstances surrounding her naturalization as a U.S. citizen.
In other words, her future in America could soon be over.
Homan didn’t mince words about whether Omar gets special treatment because she holds a congressional seat. “I’m not going to get ahead of the bureau,” he said. “We will let the evidence lead where it leads. But she will be held to the same standards you and I are held. If she violated law, then she will be held accountable.” Equal justice under the law. What a radical concept.
When asked whether the investigation goes beyond potential immigration fraud, Homan said he “knows things” but punted the specifics to the FBI, which did not respond to a request for comment. You love to see a border czar playing it close to the vest while the left melts down. For more on the Ilhan Omar federal investigation, the original reporting lays out the full timeline.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin was not nearly as coy. He said in September that investigators have already determined Omar married her brother. “We know that she married her brother to try to bring him to the United States,” Mullin said. “We know he now lives in London.” He also floated the possibility of deportation, which would first require denaturalization, and suggested there may be broader illegal activity tied to her family’s immigration to America. “If we can prove it, that you shouldn’t have been here in the first place, we will deport you,” Mullin said.
Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, saying, “I do know there are some serious allegations against Ilhan Omar. If there’s a real case there, we’re going to follow the facts.” Meanwhile, the Department of Justice confirmed the raid was based on a judicially authorized search warrant, describing it as part of an “ongoing federal criminal investigation.” More than a dozen people, including members of Omar’s family, have been subpoenaed by a grand jury. Omar’s attorneys are demanding her phone and other items seized during the search be returned, calling the seizure “neither justified nor lawful.”
Of course, Democrats couldn’t let a good federal criminal investigation go to waste without turning it into a political rally cry. Former President Barack Obama swooped in on Sunday with a social media post calling the investigation politically motivated. “It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs,” Obama wrote, calling claims about Omar’s immigration status “unsubstantiated.” Nothing says “I trust the process” quite like the guy who weaponized the IRS against conservatives telling everyone this is the real abuse of power.
Omar has denied the longstanding allegations that she married her brother, calling them “disgusting lies” back in 2016. She addressed the investigation last week on social media, saying, “Trump and his administration have been after me since I arrived in Congress. I have always stood up to him and that will never change.” She has also said investigators would “absolutely not” find anything. Federal investigators with a judicially authorized warrant, a grand jury, and a self-described strong case tend to disagree.
The investigation has been ongoing for several months, and with grand jury subpoenas already issued and multiple senior officials calling the case solid, this is moving fast. Omar has represented Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District since 2019. If the feds are right, she may have a lot more time on her hands very soon.
