The Feds Just Subpoenaed Ilhan Omar’s Family And Hoo Boy

Text size

It appears as though the federal raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s DC residence on Monday was just beginning in what seems like (finally) a serious crackdown on one of the biggest America haters in Congress.

Federal investigators have subpoenaed Omar’s sister and at least one other person connected to her family as part of an expanding criminal investigation into possible immigration fraud and false statements involving the Minnesota Democrat’s citizenship history.

The subpoenas were issued to Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, and another individual within her family circle, according to The New York Times, which cited people familiar with the investigation.

The development comes just one day after agents with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence as federal authorities examined immigration documents dating back to her childhood.

The Justice Department confirmed Monday that agents executed a court-authorized search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation but declined to disclose additional details.

According to multiple reports, investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided inaccurate information on immigration documents used to establish their legal status in the United States.

The investigation reportedly includes questions about Omar’s date of birth, her father’s immigration history and the circumstances surrounding her acquisition of American citizenship. Omar, 44, was born in Somalia and fled the country’s civil war with her family. After spending several years in a refugee camp in Kenya, she arrived in the United States in 1995. She became an American citizen in 2000, when she was 17, and was elected to Congress in 2018.

Federal investigators are reportedly examining whether her father made false statements or omitted information during the immigration process, and whether she subsequently continued the allegedly false statements into her adult life. The inquiry also involves questions about whether Omar obtained citizenship through her father’s naturalization.

The New York Post reported that Omar’s former congressional primary opponent, AJ Kern, obtained information from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in 2023 indicating that the agency had no record of her father’s naturalization. Another issue concerns discrepancies in publicly available records of Omar’s birth year.

According to the Post, congressional staff members contacted the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library in May 2019 seeking to change her listed birth year from 1981 to 1982. Investigators are reportedly examining whether any discrepancies were the result of clerical mistakes or deliberate misrepresentations.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin previously acknowledged that federal authorities were investigating allegations involving Omar’s family’s immigration history. White House border czar Tom Homan also confirmed in September that an investigation was underway.

The developments come as Omar faces a separate examination of her congressional financial disclosures. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro confirmed Tuesday that her office was reviewing financial information involving businesses connected to Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett. Those disclosures reported a substantial increase in the estimated value of the couple’s business interests between 2023 and 2024.
