Federal agents searched Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home before dawn Monday in a criminal immigration-fraud investigation. The Washington Post reports the operation has an internal nickname. It’s “World War Eleven.”
If you missed the origin, you have a treat coming. In January 2025, Omar held a press conference to promote the Neighbors Not Enemies Act, her bill repealing the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. Making her case, she explained that the law had last been invoked to detain and deport German, Japanese, and Italian immigrants during — and here she looked right at the page — World War Eleven.

Roman numeral two. She said eleven. Out loud, on camera, while legislating about the war in question.
Pause on the layers here. This was not an off-the-cuff answer to a hostile question. It was her bill, her press conference, her prepared material. She had presumably read about the internment of Japanese Americans, the detention of German and Italian nationals, the entire historical predicate for the statute she wanted off the books. And at no point in that preparation did anyone — not Omar, not a staffer, not a legislative director — notice that the conflict under discussion was the second one, not the eleventh.
Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee’s response when the clip resurfaced in April was about as economical as it gets: “Yes, that was deadly.”
Somewhere in a federal building, an official assigned a code name to a sensitive operation and simply could not resist. That person deserves a raise. Investigators spend their careers writing memos nobody reads; this one produced a phrase that will outlive everyone involved.
And the irony is almost too polished to be real. The congresswoman who wanted to repeal the Alien Enemies Act — but could not identify which war prompted its last use — is now the subject of an immigration investigation nicknamed after her own flub. You could not construct it.
Omar’s answer was the one she always gives: this is political targeting, Trump has smeared her for ten years, she will not be silenced. Nobody who has watched her for a decade expected anything else. The script does not change; only the dateline does.
As for whether the investigation produces anything, that’s a question for prosecutors and a grand jury, and the allegations have floated around for years without officials publicly producing the goods. Immigration fraud is a real crime, members of Congress are not exempt from the statutes they vote on, and if the evidence is there it will stand up without any help from the marketing department.
But the branding is already undefeated. Whatever the file ultimately contains, the name on the folder is a permanent monument to the day a sitting United States representative tried to lecture the country about history and announced there had been eleven world wars. Too funny.
