Seems like we have an entire group of people who either don’t understand sarcasm or they’re being purposely stupid when it comes to taking Trump out of context.
It happened again when President Trump traveled to San Antonio for a rally in a packed Freeman Coliseum behind Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton, but the biggest moment of the night had nothing to do with Paxton. Trump used the rally to clarify remarks he’d made earlier in the week in Nebraska about Iran bombing American cities in California.
Trump had been running a riff about how high fuel costs are “a small price to pay” for the war, and in doing so he said: “You want to see trauma? You want to see problems? Let them hit San Diego, let them hit Los Angeles.” He quickly added, “We’re not going to let that happen. We protect our cities. We protect our country.” The crowd cheered. Apparently that’s the clarification. You’re welcome, California.
California Democrats, naturally, were not appeased. Trump Iran bombing rally remarks Gov. Gavin Newsom took to X to write, “Trump thinks he will scare people into voting for MAGA candidates by threatening the bombing of over 16 million Americans. He has lost his mind.” Strong words from the guy who presided over San Francisco turning into an open-air disaster zone, but sure, let’s hear his national security analysis.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass posted on X that “we should not be in a position where we are questioning whether or not the President of the United States is threatening cities in his own country.” Bass said she called Congressman Garcia, Ranking Member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, “to investigate the dangerous threats the President has encouraged this week against Angelenos.” An oversight investigation. Over a clarification that said we’d protect American cities. Solid use of government resources, Mayor.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria also weighed in, writing, “Seriously, again? How many times do we have to say it? San Diego is not a prop. San Diego is not a target. San Diego is not your applause line.” He added, “We are a proud military city full of real people. Stop using us in your reckless war talk.” San Diego is home to Naval Base San Diego and roughly 70,000 civilians and active-duty service members. It is, in fact, a real place with real people, many of whom probably cheered when Trump said we’d protect them.
The rally itself got a little rowdy. At least a dozen protesters interrupted Trump throughout the night, including one who got close to the stage. Some were escorted out by police. Trump handled it the way Trump handles things. After one interruption, he stepped back from the mic and said, “He’s going back home to mom. But what he doesn’t know is his mom voted for Trump.” The crowd loved it.
Trump’s continued push to elect Ken Paxton to the Senate keeps him busy on the campaign trail, and you can expect more rallies and more California Democrats losing sleep over quotes they’re very creatively misreading. Drop your thoughts in the comments or share this on social media.
