Trump Just Revealed What He’s Going to Do With Iran Before Midterms

Text size

President Donald Trump was asked about his plans for Iran on Thursday in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections and he quickly responded.

Trump announced Thursday that the United States will not launch additional military strikes against Iran before the November 3 midterm elections, temporarily removing the prospect of a major American military escalation as Republicans fight to maintain control of Congress.

The president confirmed the decision in a social media post, declaring that his administration remains engaged in diplomatic discussions with Tehran despite months of military confrontation. “We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said. “We will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd,” Trump added.

The announcement represents a significant clarification of the administration’s position after weeks of speculation that American forces could resume large-scale operations against Iranian targets. The president emphasized that the American blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect, even as oil continues moving through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The waterway, connecting the Persian Gulf to international shipping routes, is among the world’s most important energy corridors. Disruptions to commercial traffic through the strait have contributed to higher global oil prices and increased pressure on American consumers.

The conflict began in February when the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran. What administration officials initially described as a relatively short military campaign has developed into a prolonged confrontation involving airstrikes, maritime operations and economic pressure. The war has also become a major political issue ahead of the midterms, particularly as Americans contend with elevated gasoline prices.

Trump’s announcement follows reports that the Pentagon had been preparing options for renewed military operations. According to Axios, U.S. Central Command was recently instructed to complete preparations for a possible large-scale campaign against Iranian targets.

Those preparations reportedly included potential strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities and other strategic installations. However, the planning did not establish that Trump had authorized another attack. Administration officials described the preparations as part of the military’s responsibility to provide the president with options.
