Hope Walz posted a finish-line photo with her father, former vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, after Sunday’s Twin Cities 10 Mile race, and the image quickly spread across social media with nearly everyone landing on the same explanation for a dark stain on his shorts.
She put the picture up on Instagram with the caption “tc 10 mile! best race ever!” Walz, 62, appears in a black long-sleeve shirt, a cap, and gray shorts, standing on a paved path with his arm around her. A dark patch is visible at the front of the shorts, concentrated at the crotch area. The post made no mention of it.
The photo moved quickly to X, where the Tim Walz race photo drew hundreds of replies. “At what mile did Timmy piss himself?” one user asked. Others wrote “Mr Laney you p*ssed yourself,” “Dry your crotch off that’s disgusting,” and “That’s definitely p*ss.” User Clerpatriot asked, “Did Tim Walz p*ss his pants? Why would his daughter post this?!” and offered two theories: that Hope hadn’t noticed, or that she “secretly hates her father.”
PJ Media’s Matt Margolis wrote that he had assumed the image was digitally altered, then checked the Instagram page directly and found the stain present in the original. Nick Sortor asked on X why she had posted “a photo of him p*ssing his pants” and whether it was “some sort of humiliation ritual.” According to coverage of the viral Twin Cities race photo, no second explanation gained any traction in those threads.
On the race itself, Runner’s World reported that Walz and Hope, 25, were among 9,559 finishers, running with consecutive bibs. He finished in 1:26:15, an 8:45-per-mile pace, placing 2,134th overall. Hope crossed 11 seconds later at 1:26:26. The previous October, Walz had run the same course with her in 1:38:12, nearly 12 minutes slower.
Twin Cities in Motion filmed the two after the finish. Walz called it the best urban marathon in America and said running it with his daughter “doesn’t get better.” Hope’s caption matched that warmth. As of Wednesday, neither Walz nor his daughter had publicly responded to the comments, and the photo remained on her Instagram page.
