Indiana Republican Party staffer Paul Tinkle got his job back Monday after being fired the previous Tuesday for flashing the “OK” hand gesture in a group photo. Yes, he was let go over the thing you do when your scuba instructor asks if you’re alright underwater.

Party Chairwoman Lana Keesling announced the rehiring and issued a public apology after Tinkle posted on X saying he was canned without ever getting a chance to explain himself. “I made the wrong decision regarding Paul’s employment, and I take full responsibility for it,” Keesling said. “I want to personally apologize to Paul for jumping to a conclusion that was not supported by the facts.”

Now, a little backstory on how a hand gesture used by every third-grade teacher in America became a fireable offense. Back in 2017, online trolls cooked up a theory that the “OK” sign was actually a secret white power symbol. The idea spread, people panicked, and apparently the panic never fully wore off, because here we are in 2026 still ruining careers over it.

Tinkle said he made the sign simply to convey “positive vibes” in the photo because, in his own words, he didn’t know what to do with his hands. A relatable problem at every group photo since the dawn of time, for the record. “I pride myself as a person of character, and wish I could’ve defended myself in person,” he said, noting he was fired before he could make any defense at all. You can follow the full story of his reinstatement through Indiana GOP staffer rehiring story.

Keesling also had a practical reason to fix her mistake fast. “With Election Day approaching, I am grateful for the people who give their time and energy to our party, and I look forward to having Paul back as part of that effort,” she said. “Together, we will continue working hard through November 3.” Nothing clarifies thinking quite like a looming election deadline.

Tinkle took the high road on X, saying he appreciated getting his job back and that he’d release a full statement later. “So many people have assisted me throughout within the party. I wish I could thank all personally,” he wrote. He ended his post with a shout-out to the party’s candidate for Indiana Secretary of State: “Let’s get Max Engling elected!” The man lost his job over a hand gesture for a week and came out the other side still focused on the mission. Respect.

Keesling has now apologized, Tinkle is back at work, and somewhere a 2017 internet troll is still very proud of himself. Drop your thoughts in the comments or share this on social media, because apparently hand gestures are still controversial in this country.
