Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) cursed at a reporter and called White House border czar Tom Homan a liar after being confronted near her Capitol Hill office about an active federal investigation into allegations of immigration and marriage fraud.

LindellTV reporter Alison Steinberg approached Omar and referenced Homan’s recent public confirmation that Homeland Security Investigations had opened a criminal inquiry into the congresswoman. Steinberg noted Omar’s own past statements that no one is above the law, and asked whether that standard applied to her. Omar replied simply, “I am not above the law.”

When Steinberg pressed further and asked directly, “Did you marry your brother?” Omar rejected the question sharply. “Absolutely not. What a ridiculous thing to ask. That’s disgusting,” she said. The exchange is detailed in Ilhan Omar immigration fraud confrontation.

Steinberg then asked whether Homan’s public statements made him a liar. Omar did not hold back. “He is. He’s been saying some dumb sh*t like you,” she told the reporter.

What the Federal Investigation Covers

The allegations center on Omar’s 2009 legal marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, which ended in divorce in 2017. Critics have long claimed Elmi is Omar’s brother and that the marriage was used to help him obtain U.S. immigration status. Omar has denied the claim since at least 2016, describing it as “absurd and offensive” and “bigoted lies.” No public court records, DNA results, or official findings have confirmed any familial relationship between the two.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said earlier this month that investigators believe Omar “married her brother to try to bring him into the United States” and that the probe may extend to the family’s original entry into the country. Mullin stressed that any future case would proceed only on evidence. Homan separately confirmed the ICE and HSI criminal inquiry but declined to discuss specifics, while ICE has withheld related records under a Freedom of Information Act exemption covering ongoing enforcement proceedings.

What Comes Next for Omar

The investigation remains active, with no charges filed as of the date of the confrontation. A separate congressional ethics review of Omar’s 2025 financial disclosure amendments, which initially listed assets of $6 million to $30 million before being corrected to a significantly lower figure, resulted in a recommendation to dismiss the wrongdoing allegations against her.

Federal investigators have not announced a timeline for completing their inquiry, and officials have said publicly that any prosecution would be evidence-driven. Omar has not indicated whether she plans any further public response beyond her remarks to Steinberg.
