Homeland Security is actively investigating longstanding immigration fraud allegations involving Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., White House border czar Tom Homan confirmed Sunday. Homan made the disclosure during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing,” saying Homeland Security Investigations is examining the claims while declining to share details.
“I know things are going on, but I can’t give specifics of what’s happening,” Homan said. He also declined to say whether investigators have uncovered any evidence of wrongdoing or whether denaturalization proceedings are being considered.
Tom Homan on the Scope of the Probe
Pressed directly on whether he was confirming a formal investigation, Homan said ICE is examining allegations that have circulated for years and “need to be looked at.” He framed the inquiry as a matter of equal accountability under the law, regardless of Omar’s position in Congress.
“If someone committed an immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congressman or not, no one’s above the law,” Homan said. We’ll let HSI, Homeland Security Investigations, continue the investigation.
Homan also noted that federal law permits denaturalization proceedings when officials can prove citizenship was obtained through fraud or material misrepresentation. the DHS investigation into Omar He was careful to add that no such proceedings have been initiated and that his confirmation of an investigation does not establish that any wrongdoing occurred.
“Denaturalization is a process,” Homan said. “It’s a very serious process.”
The Allegations Omar Has Long Denied
Omar, who was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a refugee, became a U.S. citizen in 2000. For years, critics have alleged that her 2009 marriage to British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was part of an immigration scheme and that Elmi was her brother. Those allegations have never been established in court or supported by publicly released government records, and Omar has repeatedly and forcefully denied them, calling the claims false and offensive.
No charges related to the allegations have been announced against Omar. The investigation is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to increase scrutiny of alleged fraud within the immigration and naturalization systems.
What Comes Next for the Investigation
Homan gave no timeline for when the investigation might conclude or whether findings would be made public. His confirmation that Homeland Security Investigations is actively involved signals that federal officials view the long-running allegations as serious enough to examine formally, even as the legal bar for denaturalization remains high.
Omar has not issued a public statement in response to Homan’s Sunday comments. With no charges filed and the investigation still ongoing, the case is expected to draw continued attention from both supporters and critics of the Minnesota congresswoman.
