There is a grim comedy in watching the Islamic Republic of Iran — the regime that has spent half a century murdering civilians by design — suddenly become a scholar of international humanitarian law. This week Tehran filed a formal letter with the UN Security Council accusing the United States of a “war crime,” citing a strike that it says hit a wedding in Hormozgan province, killing four civilians including a four-year-old child. The world’s diplomats nodded gravely. The game of pretend was back in session.
Take the facts seriously, because they don’t require exaggeration. The casualty numbers come entirely from Iranian government sources — the regime’s health minister put Tuesday’s toll at 18 killed, while the Iranian Red Crescent claimed four dead and 67 wounded at the wedding. These are not independent observers. The Red Crescent’s leadership is appointed by Iran’s president, and U.S. intelligence assessments have long alleged that IRGC elements have used Red Crescent vehicles and personnel to move weapons and fighters into places like Lebanon and Iraq. Treating the regime’s own numbers as established fact is not journalism. It’s stenography for a dictatorship.

CENTCOM’s response was clipped and correct. Navy Captain Tim Hawkins noted the reports originated with Iranian state media and drew the distinction that matters: the U.S. military does not target civilians — unlike the IRGC, which does it on purpose, as policy. That single line contains the entire moral asymmetry the “war crime” framing is designed to erase.
Consider the accuser’s résumé. For nearly fifty years the Islamic Republic has been, by the State Department’s assessment, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, responsible for killing and maiming more Americans than any other terror regime on earth — through its own forces and through proxies built expressly to target civilians as a weapon of psychological war. Hezbollah, the Houthis, the militias in Iraq: their entire operational doctrine is the deliberate slaughter of noncombatants. When those proxies kill civilians, Tehran calls it resistance. When an American strike kills civilians by accident – if it even happened – Tehran calls it a crime against humanity. The hypocrisy is off the charts.
There’s also this: Given the sheer tonnage of ordnance dropped in this campaign, a military actually trying to kill civilians would have produced casualties orders of magnitude higher. Restraint, not malice, is what the numbers actually show.
None of this means every strike was perfect; wars produce tragedies even when the targeting is careful. But there is a canyon between a tragic accident and a deliberate atrocity, and the regime demanding we ignore that distinction is the one that has spent five decades living on the wrong side of it.
