‘The City Will Die’: Chicago Bleeds While Its Mayor Tweets About Feelings

Forty-one people shot. Three dead. Just last weekend. And the man running that city responded the way his party always does when the bodies pile up — with a candlelit paragraph about grief and a promise to go after other people’s legally owned guns.

That’s Chicago in the summer of 2026, and President Trump has apparently decided he’s done watching it in silence.

“Chicago violence is unchecked and at record levels,” Trump wrote Tuesday. “It has never been worse!” He called the federal government “a fine tuned crime fighting machine,” said the city “will die” if Washington isn’t invited in to help, and pointed to the turnaround in D.C. as proof the model works. Then he addressed the governor directly: “Pritzker, CALL!!!”

The offer is real. The help is real. What’s missing is any sign that Illinois Democrats will take it, because taking it would mean admitting that decades of their governance produced a city where a summer weekend routinely ends with dozens shot.

Look at how Mayor Brandon Johnson answered. Not with a plan. Not with more police, more prosecutors, more consequences for the people pulling triggers. He posted about “the devastating impact of gun violence” and vowed to keep “stopping the flow of guns into our communities.” This is a mayor presiding over one of the most violent cities in the country, in one of the strictest gun-control states in the country, and his entire theory of the case is that the guns are the problem and the criminals are bystanders. Chicago has run this experiment for fifty years. The morgue keeps the results.

Through last night’s shootings, we are reminded of the devastating impact of gun violence. In a matter of moments, a life can be taken, families can be forever changed, and communities can be left grieving.

Here’s what Johnson and his defenders will pivot to: the numbers are technically down from the pandemic peak. Homicides fell from 805 in 2021 to a low of 416 in 2025. Fine. But a city doesn’t get a medal for cutting its killings from catastrophic to merely awful, and 2026 is already ticking back up. Chicago’s homicide rate still towers over comparable American cities. “Better than our worst year ever” is not safety. It’s a talking point you hide behind while your constituents bleed.

And that’s the tell. The Democratic model isn’t built to end the violence — it’s built to manage the optics of it. Announce a decline. Post about trauma. Blame the gun, the gun store, the neighboring state, anyone but the repeat offenders your own policies keep releasing. Refuse federal help not because it wouldn’t work, but because it working would be an indictment.

Trump is betting the people of Chicago are tired of being props in that performance. He’s probably right.

The city doesn’t need another statement of thoughts and prayers from the fifth floor of City Hall. It needs someone willing to treat 41 shootings in a weekend as an emergency instead of a press opportunity. The president is on the phone. Pritzker won’t pick up.
