The ‘most trusted name in news’ spent Friday afternoon telling its audience that Donald Trump was coming for the ballots of American troops stationed overseas. It wasn’t true. Everyone involved either knew it wasn’t true or had every professional obligation to know. And the correction, when it finally arrived Monday, was carefully worded to sound like a footnote rather than what it was: a retraction of a smear.
Here’s the sequence. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer sat down on The Situation Room with Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) to discuss the Democratic lawsuit against Trump’s March executive order on mail-in voting. Spanberger opened with the standard line — that the administration is trying to frighten people into staying home, stripping them of a safe and valid way to vote. No evidence offered, none requested by Blitzer. Same ol’, same ol’.
Then Blitzer went a step further and put the military in Spanberger’s mouth. Virginia has a lot of service members, he noted, who depend on mail-in ballots to have any say at all. Spanberger agreed enthusiastically, expanding it to diplomats and intelligence officers posted around the world getting their ballots in the mail. ‘Trump is trying to make it impossible for them to vote!’ The horror!!
It was false. Military and overseas voters are covered by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, and the new Postal Service rules implementing Trump’s order explicitly exempt their ballots. This is not obscure. The order was signed March 31 and has been litigated in public for five months. Spanberger is a party to the very lawsuit challenging it. If anyone in that studio was equipped to know what the order actually does, it was the two people confidently describing what it doesn’t.
So which was it — ignorance or dishonesty? A sitting governor suing over a policy she apparently can’t describe, or a governor who can describe it and chose the scarier version. An anchor who didn’t do five minutes of homework, or one who did and let the falsehood breathe anyway. You know the answer. It’s a Democrat governor and CNN. It was a lie and it was deliberate.
On Monday, Blitzer read what CNN billed as a “quick note of clarification.” He acknowledged that his comment had suggested military and overseas ballots would be affected, and clarified that they’re exempt under UOCAVA. Fine as far as it goes. But note the machinery here. The false claim aired live to CNN’s full audience, wrapped in a governor’s confirmation, at the top of a segment. The correction ran three days later, stripped of drama, addressed to whoever happened to still be watching.

That’s not an accident of timing. It’s the entire value proposition of this kind of error. The scare does its work on Friday. The walk-back satisfies the fact-checkers on Monday. The two audiences barely overlap, and everyone in the building knows it.
Blitzer is a hack. CNN is a sick joke. And more Americans were lied to again over a Trump order that never existed. No wonder Americans are at each other’s throats.
