Karoline Leavitt Is Leaving the Briefing Room — and She Leaves a Standard Nobody Will Top Easily

A familiar face in the administration will be headed out the door soon, but not because of a falling out with President Trump

Karoline Leavitt announced Tuesday she is stepping down as White House Press Secretary at the end of August to focus on her family, having recently had her second child. Trump confirmed she will move into an outside advisor role and remain an influential voice in the Republican Party heading into the midterms.

She’s 28 years old. She served in the most adversarial press environment in American political history. She did it while pregnant, returned from maternity leave, and then left on her own terms with the president calling her one of the best press secretaries the White House has ever seen.

“Karoline has been a real leader in the White House, and has done a phenomenal job fighting for Justice, Liberty, and Freedom,” Trump wrote. “Karoline has been one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office.”

That assessment is hard to argue with. The press corps that walked into her briefing room was the same one that made Trump’s first press secretary, Sean Spicer, miserable, that had turned Jim Acosta into a cable news hero, and that had spent years treating the podium as a venue for political combat rather than information exchange. Leavitt walked in younger than any of them, understood the assignment better than most of her predecessors, and simply refused to be rattled.

The CNN exchange over Trump’s Turkey travel security was a recent example of how she operates under pressure. A reporter pressed her on why the president didn’t notify the press corps of his security arrangements. She answered with the obvious: classified assassination threats aren’t press releases. She then moved on. No defensiveness. No lengthy explanation. No concessions. Next question.

She described her tenure as “the honor and adventure of a lifetime,” noting she spent countless hours in the Oval Office, flew around the world, met foreign leaders, and traveled the country meeting Americans from every walk of life. All of that, while raising a family. At 28.

The contrast with what the media spent years celebrating as communications success — the circuitous non-answers of John Kirby, the studied vagueness of Jen Psaki, the relentless blame-shifting of Karine Jean-Pierre — couldn’t be starker. Leavitt knew the material. She knew the president’s positions. She knew the questions were coming. And she answered them.

Who takes the role next hasn’t been announced. The standard is set. It’s a high one.

Conservative women of this generation are proving something that the political establishment never quite expected: they can be fighters without being mean, direct without being abrasive, confident without being arrogant. Leavitt embodied all of it at a level that her critics — and she had many, all of them very loud — could never actually undercut with substance.

Adventure of a lifetime. Well-earned. Well-deserved. And whatever comes next will probably be worth watching too.
