The Democratic Party’s internal civil war just produced its most entertaining exchange yet, and the entertainment value comes entirely at Michigan Senate socialist nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s expense.
Fetterman warned that El-Sayed has “put that seat in play” — a must-hold Senate race that Democrats cannot afford to lose if they want any chance at a Senate majority. He named ‘Independent’ commie Sen. Bernie Sanders and the Maine disaster, Graham Platner, in the same breath: “They pushed a garbage person like Platner, and now they’ve pushed an individual like El-Sayed that’s been very proud of his very deeply anti-Israel views and proud to campaign with an avowed communist.”
Every word of that is accurate. Platner had a Nazi tattoo and a rape allegation. El-Sayed says Israel doesn’t have a right to exist and campaigned alongside commie leftist influencer Hasan Piker — a man who praises Mao Zedong and celebrated Hamas after October 7th. These are the candidates Sanders and the DSA apparatus have produced for the 2026 cycle, and Fetterman is the only Democrat in national politics willing to say it out loud with his name attached.
El-Sayed fired back with the practiced petulance of someone who has never been told no: “Fetterman is the biggest issue. He’s also just an a——. He seems miserable and doesn’t like the job.”
Fetterman’s response was everything: “He just has like this weird little man syndrome energy just going around insulting people. That’s the kind of campaign he’s run.”
‘Weird little man syndrome energy.’ You cannot buy that kind of opposition research.
The feud is politically significant beyond its entertainment value. Fetterman is essentially doing what the entire Democratic establishment is too cowardly to do — publicly, repeatedly, and loudly identifying El-Sayed as a liability who is going to cost his party a critical Senate seat. He’s naming the problem. He’s attaching his name to the criticism. And El-Sayed’s response is to call him miserable and an obscenity, which is precisely the kind of “weird little man syndrome energy” that confirms everything Fetterman is saying.
The broader question Fetterman is circling without quite landing is the one that matters most: where does a pro-Israel, anti-communist Democrat go in a party that just gave its Michigan Senate nomination to a man backed by Hasan Piker? There isn’t a clean answer. Fetterman won’t switch parties. He doesn’t have enough policy common ground with conservatives to caucus with Republicans. He’s the last senator standing in a caucus that’s walking toward the cliff he keeps describing.
This midterm is shaping up to be a real humdinger.
John Fetterman is right about El-Sayed. El-Sayed is right that Fetterman is a problem for him. They’re both right that this race is now genuinely competitive.
