The revolt is official. At least seven Republican senators have now publicly vowed to block the August recess adjournment until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act. John Thune is running out of runway — and running out of allies willing to let him use the calendar as an excuse.
Mike Lee fired the first shot with the kind of precision that makes the Senate establishment uncomfortable: “I hereby object to any effort to put the Senate into recess in August — at least until such time as the Senate has passed the SAVE America Act — and hereby request a roll call vote. Do not assume you have my consent. You do not.”
Do not assume you have my consent. Four words that every Republican senator planning to board an August flight needs to hear clearly.
Rick Scott followed immediately: “The American people expect us to deliver. They deserve secure elections.” Ashley Moody put it in terms that capture exactly what this moment demands: “I didn’t come to the United States Senate because I needed something to do. I’m serving because there are things we need to get done for the American people.”
That’s the standard. Seven senators have met it publicly. The question is whether Thune can find the votes to adjourn over their objections — and whether the political cost of doing so is one he’s willing to pay ten weeks before the midterms.
Thune’s response to the revolt was vintage Thune — cautious, conditional, and designed to avoid commitment. He’s not ruling out a recess delay, he says, but only if someone can show him “how we get an outcome, how we get a result, how we get an answer.” That sounds reasonable until you remember that it’s been the answer for months — wait for the magic formula, wait for the right votes to materialize, wait for the right moment — while Democrats openly announce they’ll kill the filibuster and federalize elections the moment they take power.
The Senate is scheduled to leave August 10. That’s thirteen days away. The reconciliation bill carrying the SAVE America Act provisions needs to pass. The filibuster question needs to be resolved one way or another. And the entire Republican caucus needs to decide whether they’re willing to stand on the Senate floor and tell the American people they went on vacation rather than pass election security legislation supported by 83% of the country.
Mike Lee, Rick Scott, and Ashley Moody have decided. They’re staying. They’ve said so publicly. Their objections are on the record.
The recess cannot happen by unanimous consent. Every senator who wants to leave has to look at what’s at stake — 100 days until midterms, a documented noncitizen voter crisis, a Democratic opposition that has promised to undo everything the moment they get power — and decide whether that vacation is really worth it.
Do not assume our consent. You do not have it.
Pass the SAVE America Act. Then go home.
