Natalie Maines, lead singer of The Chicks, is back to doing what she does best, and no, it’s not singing. The 12-time Grammy winner posted a profanity-soaked Instagram attack on President Trump this week, calling him a “fugly sl*t” and warning that democracy itself is on the ropes.

In the post, Maines wrote, “Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly sl*t is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists. But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything. My last post that called him a fugly slut got removed. We’ll see how long this one lasts. Repost and help this message live. Named 1M times in the #epsteinfiles.” She rounded things out with the hashtags #democracy, #freespeech, and, in what has to be a first in political commentary, #fuglyslut. The post also included a photo of Trump and photos of people involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

Nothing says “save democracy” quite like a Grammy winner dropping slurs on social media and asking strangers to repost it. This is the level of political discourse the left has arrived at, and they want you to know they’re the serious ones.

Maines has a long history of making headlines with political outbursts. In 2003, Natalie Maines political controversy when The Chicks were still The Dixie Chicks, she told a London concert crowd, “We do not want this war, this violence and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas,” a shot at President George W. Bush just before the Iraq War launched.

That comment cost the group big. Their single “Travelin’ Soldier” had just hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, but within two weeks enough radio stations had pulled it that the song dropped completely out of the top 40 on the Hot Country Songs/Country Airplay chart. Country fans, it turns out, don’t love being lectured from a London stage.

The group eventually made the controversy part of their brand. Their 2006 song “Not Ready to Make Nice” addressed the whole ordeal, and the accompanying album Taking the Long Way debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It won Grammys for album of the year and best country album, while “Not Ready to Make Nice” took home record of the year, song of the year, and best country performance by a duo or group with vocals. So the outrage worked out pretty well for them financially, which is worth keeping in mind the next time Maines talks about gas money.

In 2020 the trio rebranded as The Chicks and released the album Gaslighter. They launched The Chicks Tour in 2022, with openers including Patty Griffin, Maren Morris, Ben Harper, and Elle King. Now Maines is back on Instagram, hashtagging her way to relevance and daring the platform to remove her posts again.

It’ll be interesting to see how long this one stays up, though at this rate Maines may just keep reposting until someone in the mainstream media gives her a standing ovation, which should take about fifteen minutes.

Let’s just remember one thing… take a look at Natalie’s before and after pictures since they’ve gone from the Dixie Chicks to the Chicks. You tell me who’s ugly.
