Florida just told the Democratic Socialists of America exactly where they can go. The Associated Press has called the Florida U.S. Senate race for Republican Ashley Moody, who beat Democratic challenger Angie Nixon and it wasn’t particularly close in spirit.
Nixon is the ‘psycho’ socialist who was screaming like a maniac in a video that went totally bonkers as everyone laughed at her nonsense. We really didn’t need that main character nonsense in politics, as we have enough of it already and it’s not getting us anywhere.
Nixon, described as a longtime labor organizer, had recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America before running for one of the most consequential Senate seats in the country. Because nothing says “I understand Florida voters” like signing up with the DSA right before an election.
Moody came to this race with a resume that actually involves, you know, working. Ashley Moody Florida Senate win She spent years as a federal prosecutor, then got elected at just 31 years old as a circuit judge in Hillsborough County, home to Tampa. She knows courtrooms. She knows the law. She is not a labor organizer who just discovered democratic socialism.
Moody had been serving as Florida’s attorney general when Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis tapped her to fill out Marco Rubio’s Senate term. Rubio, of course, left to become secretary of state in President Donald Trump’s second administration. So Moody stepped up, did the job, then went out and won the seat in her own right. That’s how you do it.
She first ran statewide in 2018, winning the attorney general race the same year DeSantis won his first governor’s race. Florida Republicans have been building something real down there, and this result is more proof of it. The Democrats sent a card-carrying Democratic Socialist to try to stop that momentum. Florida voters looked at that choice and said, hard pass.
Nixon now returns to whatever labor organizing and socialist theory seminars await her, and Moody heads to Washington as Florida’s newest U.S. senator. Republicans add another reliable conservative vote to the Senate, and Florida’s winning streak under GOP leadership rolls right along. The Democrats will probably hold a listening session to figure out what went wrong, conclude Florida just hasn’t evolved yet, and then do the exact same thing next time.
