Mamdani Does His Best ‘Socialist’ Impression – Threatens ICE On Election Day

Text size

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is threatening to sue the Trump administration over ICE agents reportedly using city-owned parking lots for immigration enforcement operations.

Mamdani demanded Monday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement immediately stop using municipal property as staging areas without authorization from his administration.

“Today, I’m telling DHS to order its agents off our lots. If they keep coming back, we will see them in court,” Mamdani whined, obviously forgetting — again — that the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause trumps state and local laws, as well as a punk mayor’s empty threats.

The Democratic Socialiste mayor sent his warning to Department of Homeland Security and ICE officials after reports that federal agents used several city-controlled properties. The locations reportedly included parking areas near Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx and Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens.

City officials argue ICE does not have permission to use those properties and maintain that federal agents must stop staging operations there. “ICE has no right to use our property as a base for tearing families apart,” Mamdani complained. The mayor added that his prohibition applies to “every park and every lot this City owns.”

The confrontation marks another battle between Mamdani and President Donald Trump over the administration’s expanded immigration enforcement campaign. Mamdani has pledged to defend New York City’s sanctuary policies and limit cooperation between municipal agencies and federal immigration authorities.

His administration has also established procedures governing attempts by outside law enforcement agencies to access city-controlled property. City employees are receiving instructions explaining how to respond when ICE or other federal law enforcement personnel seek access to municipal facilities.

The policies do not prevent ICE from conducting immigration enforcement elsewhere in New York City under federal law. Instead, Mamdani’s latest challenge focuses specifically on whether federal immigration agents can use city-owned property without permission from the municipal government. That distinction will become the central issue if the dispute ultimately reaches federal court.

The Trump administration retains authority to enforce federal immigration laws throughout New York regardless of the city’s sanctuary policies, which is 100 percent correct. Sanctuary jurisdictions can restrict cooperation by local officials, but they generally cannot prevent federal agents from independently enforcing federal immigration law.

Mamdani nevertheless argues that New York City has the authority to determine who may use municipal property for operational purposes.

The mayor previously joined more than 100 elected officials in urging private parking-lot and garage operators to prevent ICE from using their properties. That campaign relied on voluntary cooperation because New York City cannot simply order private businesses to deny federal agents access to their properties.

This should be fun. We’ll keep you advised.
