Every president gets to pick his closing backdrop. Obama took Philadelphia. Biden took Independence Hall with the red lighting that made him look like he was announcing a hostile takeover of Hell. Donald Trump, on the eve of the 2026 midterms, stood in front of the newly restored Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and said it looks better than it ever has.
Which was both no small thing and also exactly the right thing. For years the pool was a stagnant green trough in the middle of the nation’s most photographed stretch of ground, and everybody walked past it and nobody fixed it, because fixing it was somebody else’s job and the somebodies had meetings. Trump noted the renovation came with headaches, including vandalism. Of course it did. There is a segment of the population whose entire civic contribution is damaging things other people repair.
He also laid out what comes next: a triumphal arch, and a promenade running from Lincoln down to the Potomac. His line was that it should be a project uniting all Americans. Virginia and the District have already sued to stop the arch, days before construction was set to begin, so the unity is proceeding apace.
Then he turned to Tuesday and called it the most important midterm of our lifetime. He described the Democratic slate as the most extreme and dangerous in American history, and the party as one that hates America.
Look at who’s on the ballot before dismissing that as hyperbole. Michigan Democrats nominated a man who says Israel is not actually our friend and whose answer on men in girls’ locker rooms is the thing every parent in the state will be thinking about in the booth. Minnesota’s gubernatorial ticket features the lieutenant governor of the administration that lost nine figures to fraud. Hillary Clinton spent last week on a podcast explaining that the Supreme Court should go to thirteen justices, but only while Democrats hold power.
.@POTUS: Personal incomes are the highest in history. The poverty rate is at a record low. American exports are at an all-time high. More people are working today than ever. The U.S. is now, by far, the largest supplier of oil and natural gas anywhere in the world. https://t.co/dv2fKsjl85

.@POTUS: We have the most secure border in history. We got the biggest tax cuts in history. We caught billions in Democrat-approved fraud.

Trump ran the record: personal incomes at record highs, poverty at a record low, exports at an all-time high, more people working than ever, the United States the world’s largest energy supplier, the border secure, billions in Democrat-approved fraud recovered. He renewed the $5,000 payment to American adults if Republicans hold both chambers.
? JUST NOW: President Trump wraps up his CLOSING REMARKS for the 2026 midterms at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, touting some of his MAJOR wins
And showing a photo of what the pool looked like BEFORE his repairs.
Cleaning up American cities — especially our capital, stopping the ENDLESS flow of illegals into our country, ramping up deportations, and LOCKING UP CRIMINALS, just to name a few
MAKE SURE YOU VOTE, PATRIOTS! Our country will be in HUGE trouble if the Democrats win.

And then he said something no consultant would have written for him. Usually, he observed, the sitting president doesn’t win the midterms — Republican or Democrat, good or bad — but they gave this one a very strong shot.
That’s the tell. A man coasting on fake polls doesn’t say that. A man who thinks he might actually do something no modern president has managed says it, because he knows the history and he wants the people listening to know the history too. Complacency is the only thing that beats us on Tuesday.
He closed on the world stage: we were laughed at by every ruler, every president, every prime minister, every king, every queen. They don’t laugh anymore.
