An off-duty FBI agent in Chicago stopped what could have been a massacre Monday when he shot and killed a Venezuelan illegal immigrant who was firing a gun into a homeless encampment in the city’s Pilsen neighborhood. The shooting happened near West 18th Street and South Union Avenue, and the Cook County medical examiner identified the dead man as 27-year-old Oscar D. Isaya-Corrales.
According to the FBI and Fox News, Isaya-Corrales was firing into the encampment when the agent, who was commuting home alone in a Bureau-issued vehicle, spotted him and intervened. No other injuries were reported. The Chicago Fire Department transported one person to a hospital, and that person was Isaya-Corrales, who did not survive.
Here’s where the story gets infuriating. Chicago FBI agent shooting details confirm that Isaya-Corrales was an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who was taken into custody at the border back in 2023, during the Biden administration, and then released. Because of course he was. Fox News also reported that he was later arrested in California and let go again, this time despite an active ICE detainer. Democrats love to tell you the immigration system is working just fine, and then stories like this happen.
Think about that chain of events. Border agents catch the guy. Biden’s crew cuts him loose. California cops arrest him. ICE slaps a detainer on him. California cuts him loose again. And Monday he ends up firing a weapon into a camp full of homeless people in Chicago. The only thing that stopped further bloodshed was one off-duty federal agent with the good sense to act.
Chicago police’s Investigative Response Team documented the scene, and Illinois State Police helped with traffic control. The FBI’s Inspection Division is now reviewing the shooting, which is standard procedure. The agency put out a statement saying, “The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously. In accordance with FBI policy, the shooting incident is under review by the FBI’s Inspection Division. As this is an ongoing matter, we have no further details to provide.”
Federal officials have not released additional details about what led up to the shooting, and the investigation remains open. What is not under investigation is the logic that releasing someone at the border, ignoring a detainer, and then acting shocked when violence follows is a policy failure of the highest order.
The FBI’s review will run its course, and Chicago authorities will keep digging into the details. In the meantime, Republicans pushing for stronger immigration enforcement and ICE cooperation now have another case study to point to, one that Democrats and sanctuary city advocates are going to have a very hard time explaining away.
