175 Democrats Demand Feds Drop Ilhan Omar Probe Because Ballots Are Coming

House Democrats led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal signed a letter demanding the Trump administration halt a criminal fraud investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar's immigration history, arguing the timing is too close to her reelection.

One hundred and seventy-five House Democrats just signed a letter demanding the Trump administration drop its criminal fraud investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, and their main argument is essentially: the election is coming, so stop doing law enforcement. You really can’t make this stuff up.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., led the charge, firing off a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin and Attorney General Todd Blanche condemning the investigation into Omar’s immigration history. The letter followed a federally authorized, judicially approved search of Omar’s Washington, D.C., home on Oct. 12, during which as many as 25 Homeland Security Investigations agents spent four to five hours inside and seized 17 items, including old phones and notebooks.

The investigation centers on a criminal fraud inquiry into immigration paperwork filed after Omar’s family fled Somalia’s civil war. Specifically, Ilhan Omar immigration fraud probe focuses on whether she or her late father misrepresented her birth year on those documents, which could mean she obtained citizenship as an adult rather than at seventeen as previously recorded.

The Democrats’ letter didn’t argue the investigation is factually wrong. It argued the calendar makes it wrong. The letter stated that news of the search warrant, “whether properly predicated or not, could affect voters’ decisions,” and that this “strips Minnesotans of their right to a free and fair election.” They openly admitted they don’t know if the warrant was legitimate, and then demanded it be shut down anyway. Bold strategy.

The letter went further, declaring, “You have already disgraced the offices you hold, and we demand you refrain from taking any further actions that could affect the outcome of the upcoming election.” Disgraced. Because federal agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant. The kind judges sign off on. For every other American.

The Department of Justice pushed back with something Democrats apparently find exotic: a statement of fact. A DOJ spokesperson confirmed, “Today in the Washington, D.C. area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.” There it is. A judge approved it. Agents executed it. Democrats wrote a letter about the vibes.

Omar herself called the whole thing a political hit job targeting one of President Trump’s most vocal critics and said she “will not be silenced.” She also said she can no longer live at the searched home due to death threats that put her children at risk during visits. That part, the threats against her family, is genuinely serious, and nobody should wish harm on any member of Congress or their kids.

On the other side of the aisle, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., has called for Omar to be jailed and deported if the accusations are proven true. Reports also indicate she faces a second federal probe examining her finances. Meanwhile, the House Democratic Caucus’s position is essentially that powerful incumbents should get a law enforcement timeout every time a vote is close.

The DOJ and DHS had not responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on the Democrats‘ letter as of the time of reporting. The investigation continues. And 175 Democrats just went on the record saying the law should pause for Ilhan Omar. Voters can decide what to make of that.
