A Mexican illegal alien who had been shielded from deportation by both the Obama and Biden administrations is now accused of taking a sledgehammer to the Iwo Jima statue near Marine Base Quantico, Virginia, knocking off one of the soldiers’ heads and causing damage estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Prince William County police arrested 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, who was living in Stafford at the time. Officers caught him actively beating the monument with a sledgehammer. When the dust settled, the damage included the complete removal of one of the carved soldiers’ heads from a limestone statue that Felix de Weldon sculpted in 1945, situated steps from the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
Here’s where it gets really infuriating. Fox News sources revealed that Maldonado Soriano is a Mexican national who had no legal right to be in this country. He crossed the border back in December 1999, which, for the record, was on Bill Clinton’s watch. Then in 2014, the Obama administration handed him DACA status and let him stay. Maldonado Soriano lost his DACA status in August 2026 after the Trump administration declined to renew it. So three Democrat presidents essentially ran a relay race to keep this guy in the country, and the moment Trump’s team finally said no, this is what happened to a monument honoring the Marines.
White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers did not mince words in a statement to Fox News: “This criminal illegal alien’s dream is over: Maldonado Soriano disrespected our brave service members and defaced a beautiful monument that honored their sacrifice. President Trump has secured our border and is deporting illegal criminals who hate our country and our values. The socialist Democrats want to go back to open borders and flood our communities with dangerous criminal illegal aliens.
Hard to argue with any of that. Democrats spent decades building a system that protected people like Maldonado Soriano from consequences, and then act baffled when those consequences show up on a limestone war memorial. The statue, one of several smaller-scale versions Weldon created of the famous scene, stands near an entrance to Marine Base Quantico. The men it honors fought and bled on a Pacific island. The least they deserved was to keep their heads.
Maldonado Soriano now faces the legal system, and the Trump administration says he’s headed for deportation. Democrats, meanwhile, are reportedly still workshopping their argument for why this is somehow Trump’s fault. Good luck with that one.
