Barack Obama finally decided to dust off his X account and ride to the rescue of Rep. Ilhan Omar, posting a lengthy statement Sunday accusing the Trump administration of targeting the Minnesota congresswoman because of her political criticism of the government.
Obama claimed the investigation into Omar’s American citizenship is built on what he called an “unsubstantiated theory” about her age when her father became a naturalized citizen. According to Obama, Omar arrived in the U.S. at age 12, and when her father naturalized five years later, she was 17, which he says meant she automatically acquired citizenship. The Trump administration is reportedly trying to establish that Omar had actually already turned 18 by then, which would have required her to apply for citizenship separately.
Obama also alleged that federal agents searched Omar’s home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone while pursuing evidence relating to events from roughly two decades ago. Nothing like the long arm of accountability finally catching up, and suddenly it’s “political intimidation.” According to Obama’s statement on Ilhan Omar posted on X, the former president warned that even failed investigations can cause lasting financial and reputational damage to the people targeted.
“It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say,” Obama wrote. “But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Omar of Minnesota.” Strong words from a guy whose own administration used the IRS to scrutinize conservative groups, but sure, let’s talk principles.
Obama went further, accusing the Trump administration of pursuing political enemies more broadly, citing previous cases involving the New York attorney general, a former FBI director, and members of the Federal Reserve. He argued that the investigation could force Omar to spend her time and money on her own legal defense instead of representing her constituents in Minnesota’s Fifth Congressional District. Omar has been one of Trump’s loudest critics, especially on immigration policy.
Obama urged Americans to oppose what he described as political intimidation regardless of their personal views on Omar. He warned that allowing any president to use government institutions against critics sets a precedent future administrations could exploit. Rich advice from a Democrat whose party spent four straight years trying to use every government institution it could find against Donald Trump.
Omar, who became the first Somali-American woman elected to the U.S. House in 2018, fled Somalia’s civil war with her family and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before coming to the United States. The investigation continues, and so does Obama’s habit of showing up whenever a Democrat needs a political life raft. Stay tuned, because if there’s one thing reliable in American politics, it’s Barack Obama finding a camera when a Democrat is in trouble.
