‘Nobody Wants This’ – Obama’s Eyesore Library Just Got Bad News

The Obama Presidential Center has ballooned to nearly $1 billion, almost triple its original estimate, and that's just the beginning of the bad news for the Obama Foundation.

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago was supposed to be a shining legacy project for the 44th president. Instead it’s become a masterclass in how fast a budget can fall apart when nobody’s really watching the checkbook.

Besides the fact his library looks like a unwelcoming prison, the cost of it is just ridiculous and keeps getting worse for the eyesore that nobody wants.

The Obama Foundation has confirmed the center is now expected to cost approximately $1 billion, nearly three times the original construction estimate of $300 million to $350 million. The facility opened in June 2026, five years behind its original target date, and apparently the extra half-decade still wasn’t enough time to figure out how to keep costs under control.

Foundation spokesperson Emily Bittner told reporters that construction was financed through private contributions rather than direct taxpayer funding, which sounds reassuring until you look at Obama Presidential Center cost overruns and see what’s happening on the financial side of the foundation itself.

Donations and grants to the Obama Foundation dropped from roughly $195 million in 2024 to $151 million in 2025. At the same time, the organization’s liabilities nearly tripled, jumping from $35 million to approximately $103.5 million. Outstanding borrowing climbed from $15 million at the end of 2025 to around $63.5 million by July 2026. So donations are going down and debt is going up. If a Republican ran an organization like this, it’d be front-page news for a month.

Ohio State University accounting professor Brian Mittendorf told Fox News the foundation is still financially healthy, pointing to more than $1.1 billion in net assets at the end of 2025. But he also noted that much of that wealth is tied up in the property itself, which means paying the bills to actually run the massive campus could get tricky fast.

And this thing is enormous. The development covers 19.3 acres of historic Jackson Park land, which the Obama Foundation got from the city of Chicago under a 99-year lease for a one-time payment of exactly $10. Ten dollars. For nearly 20 acres of public parkland in Chicago. Most people pay more than that for parking near the place.

The city owns the land and the buildings outright, meaning taxpayers have skin in the game whether anyone wants to admit it or not. There are also separate public infrastructure improvements connected to the development that have generated their own concerns about taxpayer costs.

A proposed $470 million endowment was supposed to cover future operating expenses and protect taxpayers from picking up the tab down the road. The foundation’s total endowment stood at roughly $14.2 million at the end of 2025. The amount specifically set aside for the presidential center isn’t even clear. So that $470 million target is a long way off, to put it gently.

On top of all that, subcontractors have alleged unpaid bills, though the foundation says its construction manager is responsible for handling those disputes. The campus does include a 225-foot museum tower, a Chicago Public Library branch, public gardens, meeting facilities, and a giant athletic center with a regulation-size basketball court, so at least someone’s getting a nice gym out of the deal.

The foundation will have to figure out how to close the gap between that $14.2 million endowment and the $470 million goal while donations are shrinking and liabilities are growing. Good luck with the bake sale.

And remember folks, if this proves anything – it’s that Democrats can’t manage a budget and the ones in office will gladly raise taxes to make up for their mistakes.
