Trump Responds After Omar’s DC Residence Raided – It’s Classic Trump

Text size

President Donald Trump delivered a sharp rebuke of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar on Monday, calling the Minnesota congresswoman “totally crooked” just hours after federal agents searched her Washington, D.C., residence as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Speaking with reporters before departing the White House for Ohio, Trump denied any personal involvement in the investigation while making clear his unfavorable opinion of the progressive Democrat.

“Well, I understand they’re looking at her very carefully,” Trump said. “I’ve always found her to be totally crooked personally, but that has nothing to do with me.” The president continued criticizing Omar, describing her as a habitual complainer who frequently attacks the United States despite having immigrated from Somalia.

“I think she’s a terrible person, but that’s really up to the DOJ,” Trump added. He insisted that decisions concerning the investigation were being handled by the Justice Department, not the White House.

Trump’s comments followed an early-morning operation involving agents from Homeland Security Investigations, the investigative division of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Federal agents arrived at Omar’s Washington residence before sunrise Monday and executed a court-authorized search warrant.

The Justice Department confirmed the operation, saying investigators were conducting an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Authorities did not publicly identify the suspected offenses or disclose what evidence they were seeking.

However, sources familiar with the investigation told multiple news organizations that federal officials are examining possible immigration fraud involving paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Investigators were observed removing boxes marked as evidence from the residence. No criminal charges against Omar have been announced.

Omar, 44, was born in Somalia and came to the United States with her family after fleeing the country’s civil war. She became a naturalized American citizen in 2000 and was first elected to Congress in 2018. The investigation reportedly focuses on whether information submitted during her family’s immigration process was accurate.

Federal officials have not publicly identified any allegedly fraudulent documents or established that Omar personally committed wrongdoing. The congresswoman has also faced longstanding allegations involving her marriage history, including claims that she entered a fraudulent marriage to help someone obtain immigration benefits.

Omar has repeatedly denied those accusations, which have not been proven in court. The Justice Department has not publicly established whether those separate allegations are part of the current investigation.
