DHS Just Raided Ilhan Omar’s DC Residence And Hoo Boy

Text size

The Trump administration just turned up the heat on ‘Squad’ lefty Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) in a real big way.

Federal agents searched the Washington, D.C.-area home of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar early Monday as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving her immigration records.

Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a court-authorized search warrant at the residence, according to a source familiar with the investigation who spoke with Fox News Digital. The investigation reportedly centers on immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when the Minnesota congresswoman was a child.

The Justice Department confirmed that investigators carried out the search but provided few additional details. “Today in the Washington, D.C., area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice,” a DOJ spokesperson said. “This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.”

No charges against Omar had been announced following the search, and federal officials have not publicly disclosed what evidence agents were seeking or whether anything was seized. The raid follows confirmation last month from White House border czar Tom Homan that federal authorities were investigating allegations involving Omar.

“I know things are going on, but I can’t give specifics of what’s happening,” Homan said at the time.

Homan said elected officials should be subject to the same immigration laws as everyone else but did not identify any specific offense investigators suspected Omar of committing. Omar subsequently said federal authorities had not contacted her about an investigation.

She has repeatedly denied longstanding allegations involving immigration fraud and has characterized accusations surrounding her personal and immigration history as politically motivated.

Omar was born in Somalia in 1982. Her family fled the country’s civil war and spent several years in a refugee camp in Kenya before eventually coming to the United States. She later became a naturalized American citizen. According to Fox News, investigators are examining immigration paperwork submitted by Omar’s father when she was still a child.

Precisely what federal investigators believe could be problematic about those records remains unclear. The Justice Department has not publicly identified a specific document containing allegedly false information or explained whether authorities suspect Omar personally participated in any wrongdoing.

That distinction could be significant because the documents under scrutiny were reportedly completed when Omar was a minor. The execution of a search warrant also does not mean prosecutors have established that a crime occurred. Investigators generally must demonstrate probable cause to a judge to obtain a federal search warrant.

The investigation comes amid longstanding political tensions between Omar and President Donald Trump. Omar, who represents Minnesota’s heavily Democratic Fifth Congressional District, has been a frequent critic of Trump’s immigration and foreign policies.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Omar in return, including over her immigration background and positions on national security.
