Trump Issues New Update On The $5,000 Checks For Americans

Text size

President Donald Trump issued a new update on the $5,000 dividend checks he’s promising to Americans.

Trump released a new video along with a short text statement saying: “If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 Midterm Elections, I’m going to give all Adult Citizens in the United States of America, $5,000. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I look forward to signing those checks! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

The keyword is citizens, so anyone living in America illegally won’t be eligible unless they commit fraud, which is already a big enough problem in states like Minnesota where Democrats never seemed to care about fighting crime.

The White House has dubbed the proposed $5,000 dividend checks the “Trump Dividend,” framing them as a major campaign promise from President Donald Trump. The plan calls for direct cash payments to nearly every adult American, contingent on Republicans keeping majority control in both the House and Senate after the November 2026 midterm elections.

The administration claims the payouts are possible thanks to a strong economy and America First trade policies, though Vice President JD Vance has explained that the funding would largely come from increased customs tariff revenues, with potential income caps to exclude higher earners.

Financially, the cost is staggering, estimated at $1.2 to $1.3 trillion for the entire adult population. Critics, including fiscal experts and groups like the Tax Foundation, point out that annual U.S. customs duties fall far short of covering such an amount, warning it could worsen the national deficit and fuel inflation. They also note that the executive branch can’t issue payments of this scale without congressional approval.

Public opinion is sharply split: a Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found 57% of adults support the idea, but surveys from Reuters/Ipsos and NBC News suggest many see it as an election ploy and doubt the government will follow through.

But the other side of critics say this could be potentially be covered considering how much fraud has been uncovered and stopped.
