The Trump administration has begun mailing $500 refund checks to nearly 1 million Americans it says were overcharged for ObamaCare health insurance under the Biden administration. The Treasury Department is distributing the payments to more than 950,000 people across 30 states, each accompanied by a signed letter from President Donald Trump.
Trump first announced the refunds in a video released by the White House during the Republican midterm convention on September 10. The letter enclosed with each check makes the case directly to recipients that they were wrongly billed.
Trump’s Letter: ‘That Money Belongs to Hard-Working Americans’
For years, the Biden administration overcharged you to fund the operation of HealthCare.gov,” the letter reads, according to USA Today. “That money belongs to hard-working Americans, not the Government, and now I’m returning it to you!”
Trump elaborated on the scope of the alleged overcharges in remarks tied to the announcement. Our administration has discovered that under sleepy Joe Biden, American households buying health insurance through the ObamaCare exchange, which is a disaster, and the HealthCare.gov were massively overcharged, to put it mildly,” he said. “They were forced to pay excessive fees totaling over 500 million dollars.” According to ObamaCare refund checks mailing, the refunds are entirely separate from the $5,000 checks Trump has pledged to give every American adult if Republicans win in the midterms.
Broader Healthcare Agenda Behind the Checks
“Our administration is doing the right thing and giving the money back to the people who were wrongly ripped off,” Trump added. The administration framed the refunds as an opening move in a wider effort to overhaul how Americans pay for healthcare coverage.
Trump also used the announcement to endorse the Republicans’ proposed legislation, called The Great Healthcare Plan, which he said would lower drug prices, cut insurance premiums, and increase industry transparency. “We will stop all payments to big insurance and give the money directly to the people who will then be able to buy better healthcare at a much lower cost and keep the money, and keep the difference,” he said.
What the Administration Says Comes Next
Trump outlined additional steps he said his administration intends to take on insurance industry accountability. “We will get insurance companies to disclose their profits and how many claims they deny so we know the good ones from the bad,” he said. He also pledged full price transparency, saying the administration will “require all prices to be posted in plain, beautiful, English.”
“But the relief begins with refunding everyone who was overcharged,” Trump said. The checks represent the first tangible distribution of funds under the refund initiative, with the administration signaling that broader legislative healthcare changes are still to come as the midterm elections approach.
