A CNN panelist announced this week that Americans should have the capacity to be horrified. The occasion was not a war or a scandal. It was a photograph. President Trump has installed a Presidential Walk of Fame at the White House, and where Joe Biden’s portrait would go, there is an image of an autopen. He showed it to Xi Jinping. Xi laughed. The panelist called it childish and classless.
Put aside the theater critique for a moment and ask why the joke works, because a gag only travels if the underlying thing is recognized as true:

The autopen is not a random insult. It’s a reference to a real and still-unresolved question about who exercised the powers of the presidency for four years. Thousands of documents went out over Biden’s signature — clemency grants, executive orders, official actions with legal force — applied by a machine. Congressional investigators have spent much of the past year trying to establish who authorized those signatures and whether the president was engaged in the decisions at all. His former aides have sat for depositions. Some declined to answer. The country still does not have a clear account.
That is the substance the picture points at. It’s compact, it’s visual, and everybody gets it instantly, which is precisely why the reaction has been outrage rather than argument. Nobody on that panel disputed the premise. They objected to the venue.
And the venue objection collapses under thirty seconds of scrutiny. What else happened during that visit? Trump took the Chinese leader to the National Archives to look at the founding documents — the Declaration, the Constitution, the charters of a self-governing people, shown to a man who runs a one-party communist state. At the state dinner, the music included selections from Les Misérables, a show whose songs Beijing has treated as politically inconvenient. Those are pointed choices, made with intent, and they say something to Xi that no communiqué would. CNN produced no segment on either.
Then there’s the matter of who’s delivering the lecture. CNN hosted the June 2024 debate. Its own stage is where the Biden mental status issue finally became undeniable to tens of millions of Americans, after three years in which the network treated video evidence of decline as a right-wing smear and the reporting on it as disinformation. The autopen story exists because the press spent four years declining to ask who was running the executive branch. A network that missed the scandal does not get to referee the joke about it.
There’s a reason this is the hill they keep choosing to die on. Decorum complaints require no actual reporting. You can be horrified on camera without having to document a damned thing. Meanwhile the president showed a foreign autocrat the Constitution and let him laugh at an autopen. One of those is a message. The other is a punchline. CNN covered neither.
