Most of Kamala Harris’s closest former aides, advisers, and donors have randomly surfaced to offer views on her 2028 aspirations and Harris probably won’t like what they said.
Most of them do not believe she will run for president in 2028, according to a new report from Axios. The findings raise significant questions about the shape of the next Democratic primary field, where Harris currently holds a commanding lead in polling averages.
Harris leads the RealClearPolitics polling average at 24.1 percent, more than 10 points ahead of California Gov. Gavin Newsom at 13.8 percent. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg sits at 13.1 percent, followed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 11.1 percent and Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff at 8.8 percent.
Former Harris Aides Prediction
Axios surveyed eight former Harris aides and advisers, including several who held senior positions. Five predicted she will not run, two called it a coin flip, and only one expected her to enter the race. One former aide argued that a candidate serious about running would already be expanding staff, traveling more aggressively, and taking a larger role in shaping party policy. The report also notes a financial problem: several major donors remain angry over the 2024 loss, and some are already gravitating toward rivals such as Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Newsom. Top Democratic donor Reid Hoffman recently predicted Harris would face what he called a “very challenging path.”
Harris Keeps Everyone Guessing on 2028
Harris addressed her political future earlier this month during a podcast interview with soccer player and progressive activist Megan Rapinoe. She described her commitment to public service in unambiguous terms. “I don’t know how to live and not serve. I honestly don’t. I just don’t. It’s something I’ve come to terms with. I don’t know how to, I just don’t know a life without figuring out how I can help move the needle,” she said.
On the 2026 midterms, Harris was direct about her current priorities. “So right now, midterms, midterms, midterms. Full-time occupying my thoughts, my mind, and my work. We have to win these midterms,” she said, adding that she is focused on winning back the House and Senate “so that we can stop the madness.” When asked directly whether she plans to run in 2028, Harris again said she has not decided.
What Comes Next for the Democratic Field
The report arrives a week after Newsom told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he will not enter the Democratic primary if Harris decides to run. That pledge means Harris’s decision carries major consequences for who else steps into the race. If she passes, the field could open quickly for Newsom, Moore, Buttigieg, and others already positioning themselves. A formal answer from Harris, whenever it comes, is expected to trigger rapid movement among donors and operatives across the party.
However, Kamala Harris’ last presidential campaign was a complete disaster, so it’s unlikely that sponsors will want to waste money like that unless they’re desperate for a tax write-off.
