Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost convincingly to President Donald Trump in 2024 after blowing through a $1.5 billion war chest, is back in the news.
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded to former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Malibu home Friday night after a woman allegedly entered the property without permission. Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were not home at the time. According to Harris spokesman Eduardo Negrón, private security personnel intercepted the woman before she reached the residence.
“Security personnel stopped an individual who illegally entered Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff’s property before the individual reached the home,” Negrón said. “Vice President Harris and Second Gentleman Emhoff were not present. They are grateful to the security and law enforcement personnel who responded swiftly.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said deputies from the Lost Hills station were called to the property at approximately 10:30 p.m. When deputies arrived, they spoke with the unidentified woman outside the residence. She complied with requests to leave and departed voluntarily. No arrest was made.
Authorities filed a trespassing report and said additional patrols would be conducted around the property as a precaution. Officials have not publicly identified the woman or explained why she entered the property. Fox News reported that the woman had initially arrived by rideshare, approached the home and was told by security personnel to leave before later returning, prompting the call to law enforcement.
The incident has renewed attention on Harris’ security arrangements following the end of her federal Secret Service protection. Former vice presidents normally receive Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office. Former President Joe Biden had extended Harris’ protection beyond that period, but President Donald Trump revoked the extension in August 2025.
That decision left state, local and private security personnel responsible for much of Harris’ protection. The California Highway Patrol continues to assist with her security, although CHP officers were not stationed at the Malibu property when Friday’s incident occurred, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Los Angeles Police Department had also briefly helped provide protection after the Secret Service extension ended but later withdrew amid concerns about manpower and the use of city resources. Harris and Emhoff purchased the Malibu property earlier this year for approximately $8.1 million. The home is located in the Point Dume area, one of the city’s most exclusive coastal neighborhoods.
Friday’s incident did not result in injuries, property damage or an arrest, and authorities have not suggested the woman posed a specific threat to Harris or Emhoff. Still, the fact that an individual was able to enter the property before being intercepted by private security has prompted renewed scrutiny of how the former vice president is protected following the loss of extended federal coverage.
For now, sheriff’s officials say the immediate response will be increased patrols around the residence while the trespassing report remains on file.
