So Why Is Mamdani Releasing 9/11 Files Just Days Before the Anniversary?

Days before the 25th anniversary of September 11, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced his administration is releasing more than 170,000 pages of previously unpublished records on air quality around Ground Zero, with hundreds of thousands more to follow over the next year. The stated rationale is transparency, and on its own terms that’s a defensible goal. The problem is everything surrounding it — the calendar, the messenger, and the frame he chose to wrap it in.

Start with the substance, honestly, because the story underneath is real. There is a genuine and painful history here: first responders and residents were told the air was safe when it wasn’t, and thousands have since died of 9/11-related illnesses — by some counts, more than were killed on the day itself. A city that limited its liability while people breathed poison deserves scrutiny, and the families suing for these records were right to want them. If Mamdani had released the files in March, or June, or any of the other nine months on the calendar, the transparency case would stand clean.

Mayor Mamdani, joined by 9/11 survivors, electeds, activists & Jon Stewart, announces release of air quality records showing officials knew the air around Ground Zero was dangerous.

He didn’t. He chose the days immediately before the anniversary — the one window each year reserved for mourning the 2,977 murdered by radical Islamic terrorists — and used it to redirect the nation’s attention toward the failures of city bureaucrats. That’s the tell. An anniversary that should belong entirely to the victims becomes, in Mamdani’s staging, an occasion to indict the government’s response rather than the men who made a response necessary. Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart and a bank of advocates at the podium; the terrorists who caused all of it nowhere in the framing.

And the framing matters, because it inverts the moral order of the day. Yes, bureaucratic failure compounded the tragedy. But there is no toxic-dust story without the attack, and there is no attack without Osama bin Laden, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and the hijackers. Folding the 5,400-plus who died later into a running body count aimed at City Hall quietly shifts the villain from the men who flew the planes to the officials who mishandled the aftermath. That is a category error, and given who’s making it, it doesn’t read as accidental.

Because this is not a mayor with the benefit of the doubt on 9/11. This is the same Mamdani whom more than 100,000 people have petitioned to bar from the anniversary ceremony, over a record that includes praise for an imam named an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the appointment of a chief counsel who once defended an al-Qaeda figure. A politician with that history, choosing this week, to make 9/11 about government liability rather than the terrorists, has told you what the exercise is for.

Release the records. Investigate the failures. Both are warranted. But do it in October, not on the graves. The date he picked is the argument.
