Rahm Emanuel went on Fox News Sunday and said out loud what most establishment Democrats whisper into their drinks: the Democratic Socialists of America want to defund the police, empty the prisons, open the borders, and abolish the Pentagon. He called them a dead weight on the party. He said you can’t win the White House by turning blue districts midnight blue — you have to flip red ones.
He’s right about the politics. He’s wrong if he thinks a press appearance is going to stop what’s already happened.
Emanuel has been road-testing this message for over a year, including a two-day swing through Des Moines that nobody bothered to pretend was about anything other than 2028. He is not subtle. The tell is always Iowa in August.
The centrist alarm bells have been ringing all summer. Jonathan Chait, Van Jones, former Clinton strategist Mark Penn — people who spent decades on the left flank of mainstream Democratic politics — have all, in the span of a few weeks, publicly warned that the DSA represents something categorically different from ordinary progressive politics. That’s a significant roster. When Van Jones is writing pieces asking whether the DSA is actually regressive, the center-left coalition is not holding.
But here’s what all of this misses, and what Emanuel either can’t see or can’t afford to say: the DSA cochair in New York City has already explained the strategy with admirable candor. They are using the Democratic Party as a ballot-access vehicle. They do not share its goals. They build their own organization, get elected under the Democratic label, and push their own agenda from inside. The establishment, he said plainly, is an obstacle — not a home.
That is not a hostile takeover. That is an occupation that has already occurred in significant portions of the party, and the occupiers are being perfectly transparent about it.
Chuck Schumer, meanwhile, endorsed Abdul El-Sayed for Senate and pledged a “big tent.” The tent, it turns out, fits everyone except people who want to win Michigan by something other than DSA margins.
The historical pattern here is not complicated. The moderate faction of a revolutionary coalition does not prevail over the radical faction. This has been true everywhere it has been tried, without meaningful exception. The radicals are more committed, more organized, and — crucially — under no illusion that the moderates are their friends. The moderates always are.
Emanuel knows this. He grew up in Chicago politics. He has seen machine politics devoured by insurgencies before. He is smart enough to understand that warning about the DSA on Fox News while Senate leadership endorses DSA-adjacent candidates is not a strategy. It’s a press tour.
If he wants to actually save the Democratic Party from the people who openly describe it as a costume, he will need to do something Rahm Emanuel has never once in his career been willing to do – lose a primary.
