Musk Is Dropping Up to $200 Million on the Midterms While the DNC Is Mortgaging Its Building

The world’s first trillionaire — Elon Musk, whose net worth crossed that threshold after SpaceX went public in June — is expected to spend between $100 million and $200 million supporting Republicans in November’s midterm elections, according to Wired. The spending will focus on voter turnout operations in key battleground states, with particular attention to Texas, where the money will help Ken Paxton defend his Senate seat against a Democratic challenger.

Add it to the pile and the financial picture becomes almost comically lopsided. Musk spent $70 million through his PAC in 2024 — including his famous $1 million-a-day voter registration giveaway in swing states — on the way to Trump’s decisive victory.

This cycle, his investment is expected to be two to three times larger. That’s on top of Trump’s personal PAC deploying $30 million into tight races, the RNC sitting on $128.5 million, MAGA Inc. holding $400 million, and the NRCC with $92.7 million. Total Republican committee and allied infrastructure: well north of $700 million.

The Democrats’ position is the direct inverse. The DNC has $16 million in assets and $18.5 million in debt — net negative $2 million — and mortgaged its own headquarters to take out a $15 million loan. The party that spent two decades telling America money was corrupting politics is heading into the most consequential midterm in a generation functionally broke, asking vendors to hold their invoices, and watching the people who were supposed to write big checks redirect their money toward DSA candidates their donors don’t want to fund.

The structural advantage compound further because of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on coordinated party spending. Republicans have also come out on top in redistricting battles, with a favorable ruling on the Voting Rights Act and Virginia’s illegal redraw adding to the GOP’s structural map advantage heading into November.

What all of this means in practice: Republicans can flood competitive House and Senate races with resources that force Democrats to spend defensively in districts they should be able to hold. A Democrat running in a genuine swing district who has to defend against a Republican money advantage — while simultaneously being asked whether she agrees with Abdul El-Sayed, Angie Nixon, and the DSA co-chair who wants to abolish the Pentagon — is a Democrat who is going to have a very difficult fall.

The polling gap between Republicans and Democrats has been closing for six weeks. Generic ballot leads don’t tell the full story when one party has more than five times the financial resources of the other.

Any polling favorability for Democrats is likely to narrow as Republicans pour huge sums into key races.

One hundred to two hundred million dollars from Musk. More from Trump’s PAC. More from the RNC. More from NRCC. Meanwhile, the DNC is mortgaging its building.
