The race that Democrats’ entire Senate majority hopes run through just got considerably tighter. A new High Point University poll shows Roy Cooper leading Republican Michael Whatley 50-45 among likely voters — a five-point margin in a race where earlier polling had shown Cooper ahead by as many as 15 points. Among registered voters, it’s 48-41. The trendline is moving in exactly the wrong direction for the former governor who was supposed to be the Democrats’ safest bet for a pickup.
Context matters here and deserves to be stated plainly. Roy Cooper was one of the most successful Democratic governors in the modern South — a man who survived multiple Republican wave elections in North Carolina while maintaining approval ratings that other Democratic politicians in red-trending states could only dream about. He is the Democrats’ best available candidate for this seat. He has name recognition, a statewide record, and should be the kind of candidate who runs comfortably ahead in polls this close to the election.
He’s at 50 percent. Against a Republican who is still building name recognition. With 73 days to go.

The NRSC put it bluntly: “The common knowledge surrounding Cooper’s perceived strength is simply wrong.” And then the operative line: “This race will only continue to tighten as Michael Whatley meets North Carolinians where they’re at and Cooper’s vulnerabilities are exposed.”
The national map makes the North Carolina stakes impossible to overstate. Democrats need to hold or flip multiple Senate seats to take back the majority. Their Senate candidate quality has been catastrophically undermined by the DSA takeover — Graham Platner with a Nazi tattoo in Maine, Abdul El-Sayed saying Israel doesn’t have a right to exist in Michigan, Angie Nixon with her pink megaphone in Florida. In state after state, Democrats’ best pickup opportunities are being handed to Republican incumbents by candidates who can’t win general elections.
North Carolina was supposed to be the exception. Cooper was supposed to be the one candidate who could hold a race that the maps otherwise make brutal for Democrats. Five points with 73 days to go is not the “exception” Democrats needed.
The financial picture compounds the polling problem. The DNC is functionally insolvent — $16 million in assets against $18.5 million in debt, mortgaging its headquarters, asking vendors to hold their invoices. The NRSC has $55.9 million. Trump has announced he’s opening the financial floodgates from his personal PAC. Michael Whatley is going to be well-resourced heading into fall.
Cooper’s lead was 15 points. It’s 5 now. The NRSC says it will keep falling. Republicans don’t win the Senate map without North Carolina. Democrats don’t win it without North Carolina either.
Whatley is coming. Cooper’s vulnerabilities are being exposed. And 73 days is a very long time when the trendline is moving this fast. Chuck Schumer’s path back to majority leader is getting narrower.
