Chuck Schumer Has Stopped Promising Democrats Can Win Michigan

The Democratic Party’s internal civil war with its socialist wing is over. The socialists won. Chuck Schumer has stopped promising Democrats can hold Michigan. He’s mapping out how to win the Senate majority without it — which is the political equivalent of a general announcing he’s drawing up plans in case his own capital city falls.

That’s not a characterization. That’s Emily Compagno on Fox News Friday stating plainly what the political class is now privately acknowledging: Schumer is in crisis management mode, not campaign mode.

“This is not sort of cheerleading to me, this is not championing, this is crisis management,” Compagno said. “El-Sayed was explicit about running on a platform against Schumer, about sort of dismantling that power structure with him anyway.”

The bind Schumer faces is the one the entire Democratic establishment created for itself through years of accommodation. You can’t simultaneously declare that socialism is fine for the big tent and then successfully argue to swing voters that your party isn’t socialist. The socialist candidates are winning the primaries because Democratic primary voters are now — by majority — socialists. The polling is unambiguous: 58 percent of Democrats view socialism favorably, 66 percent by Gallup. Two hundred and two of 212 House Democrats refused to sign a statement that said “we are capitalists, not socialists.”

The establishment didn’t fight it. They appeased. Hakeem Jeffries got booed off screens at victory parties for his endorsed candidates. Debbie Dingell pledged to support the full Democratic ticket after watching El-Sayed win. Schumer is trying to recount the Senate map without Michigan because his party’s primary voters chose a man who says Israel doesn’t have a right to exist and was backed by a Mao-praising Twitch streamer.

The financial picture amplifies the crisis. The DNC is buried in debt heading into the midterms. The RNC has $128.5 million. MAGA Inc. has $400 million. Republican committee infrastructure totals $677 million against Democrats’ $136 million. A socialism civil war costs money to manage — and Democrats don’t have it.

Republicans should understand the full picture before celebrating. Some socialist candidates will lose in November — in general electorates that look nothing like Democratic primaries. But others will win, and each one who wins makes the next socialist primary challenge easier. The pattern compounds. The establishment gets weaker. The DSA gets stronger.

“It’s very telling, I think they’ve already given up,” Compagno said. “It was clear what would happen if El-Sayed won that primary.”

The Democrats haven’t just lost one Senate race. They’ve lost the argument for what their party is supposed to be — and the institution to enforce it even if they wanted to.

Schumer is rerouting the map. Fetterman is calling them communists. Carville is threatening to leave. Nobody is actually stopping it. The socialists won. The party just hasn’t finished figuring out what that means.
